I highly recommend everybody go and see this. I'd have posted it in like the week-old thread...but that wasn't so much about the movie as it was about the controversy surrounding it...and honestly I don't have much to discuss there. What I wanna say is that His Dark Materials is one of the most brilliant book series of all time, and this movie was an amazing adaptation of the first book in the trilogy...and I'm really, really hoping that it makes enough money for the other two to be made. I didn't have really high hopes when I discovered that Chris Weitz was directing it...but he proved me very, very wrong. It was a very faithful adaptation. It took a few liberties here and there...but everything important that is supposed to happen does, and everything that was changed was minor and inconsequential, and very understandable within the constraints of a movie setting. But seriously...if you're into fantasy and stuff, you should definitely go check this movie out. It's great to see up on the big screen, and it just tells an awesome story, backed up by excellent casting and acting. If you don't like Nicole Kidman...don't let that shy you away from the picture. She's actually very very good in it. I like her anyway, but still. In any case...I'm rambling a lot, but that's just because this is my favourite book series of all time and I'd really like to see all three books make it to the big screen. If you see it and you enjoy it, recommend it to people. It's a seriously great movie...and you should definitely, definitely check it out. Even moreso if you were a fan of the books. Anyway...rambling over with. Please see the movie. It's amazing. That's all

I've got a serious question.
What is James Bond doing, hanging around with polar bears?

It's getting pretty poor reviews over here. Shame because I was hoping it would be good. Considering New Line have already greenlit the 2 sequels it really needs to make a lot of money or else they could be in trouble.

I'm not sure why it's getting poor reviews...I thought it was quite excellent. But I tend to disagree with critics a lot of the time, so there's that. And rra, the main polar bear knocks another one's jaw off and breaks its neck with its mouth. I'm fairly certain they're fit to be chillin' with Bond

Ebert gave it four stars, though I can't take his review too seriously when he says THE GOLDEN COMPASS is deeper than LOTR. I suppose it depends on what you are looking at when you consider depth.

I think it's deeper than LOTR myself. But that may also be because I favour His Dark Materials far over the LOTR series anyway. I love the movies, but I can't stand the books...I hate the way Tolkien wrote.

But it's not so much that as it is his fondness for adding in details that really have no relevance to the story whatsoever and really don't need to be there. I understand fleshing out the world you've created...but there's a certain point that it's just not necessary anymore. But alas, we are getting off topic.

I dig Ebert, always been a fan of his reviews, but he's notorius for being swayed on some movies for more of their political overtures than their quality....or not.
Then again, I didn't like the first POTTER movie, and raves of how its a classic this, classic that, and PRISONER/GOBLET are alot better by light-years.
BTW, you all know the budget of THE GOLDEN COMPASS after the massive CGI delays and cost overruns?
$250 million

I love the book...but I just don't much care for the flick at all. I like all the other ones a great deal, but the movie just didn't do it for me. And yeah, TGC was quite expensive...but it was amazing. I'm hoping The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass do eventually end up getting made.

If they go on that cost then they are looking at $750 million on a franchise that I just don't see making anywhere near that kind of money.

So what you're saying is that for THE GOLDEN COMPASS to break even they have to surpass what THE LION THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE did!? They must be out of their freakin' minds...

I mean the trilogy could cost about $750 million to make. So the 3 films combined would have to make that amount.

What is the total cost when you factor in marketing anyway? EDIT: Holy crap, 53% on metacritic.

To quote what a friend of mine thought of the movie:
"Weitz and New Line Cinema tried to cover their asses so much from offending nobody, they forgot to make a movie."
Again, its what he thinks.

I intend to check it out for the fantasy and sci-fi aspects, for the same yet entirely different reasons I want to check out I Am Legend.

My friend works at a theater and apparently the boycotts and protests staged by those who take issue with the source material seem to have taken a big bite out of the crowds they were expecting. They ramped up the staff, expecting picket lines and crowds fighting to get in, but there were very few families with kids and the small crowds they did get on opening night were mostly college kids. Apparently Enchanted is doubling GC at this specific theater thus far this weekend and they have yet to fill 50% of the theater for any of the showings.
It's not really my thing, to be hoenst, and this is actually one of the first positive things I heard about it. Glad you enjoyed it, though.

guarantee that at least a third of the people seeing it are doing it to spite the protests I don't think that many went at all.... My friend I mentioned above is rather obsessed with Box Offices and what-not and sent me this: SATURDAY AM: Friday night only $8.6 million from 3,528 theaters with anemic per screen average. Weekend estimate for $27 million. Cost of movie: $200+ million. Wildly expensive flop should sink New Line Cinema chairman Bob Shaye's chances to stay on when his contract expired in 2008... Full report coming... www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/According to him, it'll be lucky to get 1/3 of its budget back.
