It's December. And that means that the Christmas songs that slowly eased their way in around mid-November are now out in full-force. One of the songs that I grew up on, and represents Christmas the most for me, is Fairytale Of New York by The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl The song is considered a classic in Ireland, and the UK it seems as well. Whenever there's a countdown of favourite Christmas songs on TV or radio or magazines, it's always either Band Aid or Fairytale. But I've always wondered, is the song popular outside of Ireland and the UK? Have people even heard of it? I'd be surprised if it was. Here's the video, if you never heard of it and want a listen.... ie.youtube.com/watch?v=05Hk7zc4oGs

Unfortunately no. They do play Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" ad nauseum until you feel like smashing the radio with a hammer, though.
Why have no new Christmas songs came out in the past 20 years? I'm getting really bored with covers...

This is my first christmas in Canada, but living in Ireland, I heard this song every single christmas and St. Patricks day, almost every day of the holiday season. I am so so sick of this song.

Having lived in Ireland for 23 years, I can honestly say I've NEVER heard this song outside of the Christmas period, let alone on St. Patrick's Day. I like the song. It's not my favourite Christmas song (that honour goes to Chris DeBurgh's "A Spaceman Came Travelling"), but it's an enjoyable enough tune. It's been lent an extra degree of poignancy by Kirtsy MacColl's untimely death a few years ago.

St. Patricks Day? I've never heard this song played out of the usual Christmas window. Eventually (as we get closer to the 25th) I'll get sick of it too. But seen as I heard it for the first time this year yesterday, as of now, I'm high on it.

Have you been to a bar on St. Patricks day? Last year, I was in Belfast for St Patricks day and they played it numerous times throughout the day.

WXPN in Philadelphia plays it a couple times during the holidays. But outside of cutting-edge public radio stations, you're not going to hear it on the radio.
It's in my top 3 X-Mas tunes with "Christmas Baby(Please Come Home)" by Darlene Love and "Merry Christmas (I Don't Wanna Fight Tonight)" by The Ramones.

Best Christmas song ever. That neutered version done by Ronan Keating was a complete insult.

I've heard of the song, but I found it after I got into the Pogues because of that single Shane McGowan did with Nick Cave.
I love the song. Too bad they don't play it in the States.

If I say I really don't like this song, will I get beaten up?

Well...in that case....
I love it! ;D
