Disclaimer: First off, just want to say, if you don't like Rap/Hip-Hop, than please just try and stay out of this thread(that is, if you're going to make snide comments like "none of them"). I don't want to see this thread turning into the WrestleCrap version of No Limit Soldiers vs. The West Texas Rednecks.
By Current, I mean still actively releasing new material and/or doing shows. So no Sugerhill Gang(sadly).
If you would have asked me before about a week ago, I would have said, as far as more mainstream rappers are concerned, Jay-Z. Good beats, excellent rhymes that aren't nonsense. And the fact that he's an excellent business man as well.
But then about a week ago I started listening to Nas. Once again, great rhymes that aren't nonsense, and one advantage he has over Jay-Z is his sampling. Probably some of the best sampling I've heard post-Biz Markie*.
So its between those two for me.
What about you guys?
*Biz Markie released an album with some un-cleared samples being used, which was taken to court. He lost, and the sampling process for music has been forever changed since then

Jay-Z and Nas are still great after all these years, it's amazing. Ghostface has been mostly terrific as a solo artist (Fishscale was probably my favorite hip-hop album of 2006). Common's last two albums were two of his best. Then there's Lupe Fiasco, MF Doom, Talib Kweli, Mos Def. So many to choose from.
It's too hard for me to pick who I think is the best, or who's even my favorite. Just way too much talent in that last paragraph.

For me: Atmosphere. I also like Jay-Z and Nas. And any member of Wu-Tang is gold.

I don't listen to a lot of rap, but generally I listen to groups of rappers with little skill... like Three 6 Mafia. I like Three 6 Mafia's album that had Stay Fly on it. For rappers with skill, Wu Tang is always awesome

For rappers with skill, Wu Tang is always awesome Agreed. If we're talking about best hip-hop group, I'd say Wu-Tang and The Roots are at the top. I'd give a slight edge to The Roots, though, since they play instruments (and play them damn well).

Don't listen to a lot of the underground stuff, but Jay Z is the best I've ever heard. His rhyme scheme can't be matched. Again, not an hardcore enthusiast, so if there is someone better, I just don't know of them.

I give Jay-Z the edge in rhymes, but Nas gets it for sampling. And I can't believe I forgot Kanye. He's a breath of fresh air to the hip-hop community(its always nice to get a "non-thug" rapper every once in a while).

I guess Eminem doens't count because he's not released a record in going on four years now, and Skinnyman three years.
My current favourite is Plan B. He's the great hope of British rap as far as I'm concerned. He's dark, he's twisted, he's funny, he's not gangsta, he has character sketches, he has originality, he's just great.

Lupe Fiasco. He's probably the first artist that debuted in the last 3 years that I'd actually pay to see in concert. All the 90's rappers are still good though.
