I've never had one before. I'm just looking for one which can facilitate the internet and save documents and spreadsheets for college on it. And I do not wanna go mad on the moolah.
So, can any of you crappers out there give me some good suggestions on which brand I should get? And I definately need a laptop so no 'get a PC instead' replies thankyouverymuch.

Man, if you can somehow find one cheap, get an iBook or iMac. Seriously, if you're not going to play games, they're the way to go.
If not, avoid Dell. They break a lot. I can't count the number of people in school who complained when their Dell broke in 2 months.

Yeah it seems with everyone I ask, half the people say Dell is very reliable with laptops while the other half say steer clear of them

They don't seem to be very consistent with their product. I would just make sure you get one with a decent amount of RAM, cause my laptop is lacking in RAM and it sucks.

I personally would get a refurbished laptop from a reputable store like TigerDirect. I've bought from them before and they took care of me. When my friend's computer died for the second time* right after the carried-over HP warrantee went out, the TigerDirect warranty came into play and they had a technician drive 180+ miles to fix his computer because he needed it in 6 days for school and couldn't mail it in. *- Don't look at porn or warez or it'll happen to you too.

Ahh, TigerDirect. My brother and uncle work for one of their subsidiaries, Systemax (based out of Fletcher, Ohio). I got my desktop from there, and I'll be getting a laptop from there in the next few weeks. The computers are much better quality than Dell's IMO.
And also, don't get Vista yet. The bugs have yet to be worked out, and it eats RAM for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (aka you need 2-3 GB of RAM to run the more advanced versions of Vista).

From what I've heard, Toshiba is the best.
I can't say why, it's just what I heard.

I endorse this thread. I am also getting a laptop (probably not till September when I am back from England and hoping for back-to-school sales. I actually don't care about price so much but need it to be super fast (I have the attention span AND tolerance level of a 2 year-old). I don't play games or do video thingies now, but that might change when I actually have my own laptop. I have an IT advisor who recommends Toshiba and HP.

I can't say anything but good things about my Toshiba Satellite. It's survived a lot of havoc and abuse. It got to where it overheated a lot, but a USB chillmat remedied this. I'm sure that's more my fault than the fault of the computer its self, as I had had the thing a while before this started to happen.

I also have a toshiba satellite- this baby gets hot. I just try not to block the vents when that happens.

I've never EVER had it overheat since I started using my USB chill thingy device. So, I love my computer. I'm amazed it's still alive, I know the HD has GOT to be at critical mass.
