Now I believe in 1999 the Sandman had a breif run in WCW. I really didn't pay attention to much since it was really forgettable. But I remember he was known as Hardcore Hak and had some weird storyline with that dreaded Junkyard Invitational. Now my question is why did they refer to him as Hardcore Hak when he used Sandman in the indies and TNA, was it a way of mocking him and ECW? Two was the Junkyard invitational the last thing Sandman did in WCW or did he stay for a little bit since I seem to remember him being in ECW early on in there run with TNN. If anyone can help me out with this i'd appetiate it.

I'm assuming they called him Hak so they could have the rights to the name. See: Cor Von, Marcus
OWW lists the Junkyard Invitational as his last match, and they're pretty reliable.
His last match with WCW was 7-23 and he re-debuted in ECW on 10-11.

The Junkyard Invitational was his idea I believe, because at the time Ric Flair was President of WCW and said there would be no hardcore wrestling in a WCW arena, so Hak made the JYI to take it outside.
The storyline leading to the JYI was basically revoving around Hak, Bigelow and Brian Knobbs.
Why he was called Hak, im not sure. There was probably a reason but I dont know it.
He left WCW shortly after Bash at the Beach, I dont remember if he did anything after the JYI though, but if so, it probably wasnt noteworthy.
I just remember his promo when JJ Dillon comes out and tells him to not smoke and drink etc. and Hak laughs at him.

The reason he was called Hardcore Hak was because the WcW writers and bookers viewed hardcore wrestlers as a bunch of hacks. So they just removed the c and called him Hardcore Hak.

I seem to remember Bischoff going into the ring to try to forcibly make him stop smoking.
Anyway, I always heard that he was Hak because that was actually his childhood nickname.

Thanks guys! I was figured that most that was what happened but I wasn't sure. It's funny how badly they used people at that time. I mean Sandman was a total joke there when they could have used him much better. Also they used Terry Funk badly as well and made him look like a joke and he was a former NWA Champion. Although they used Vito much better in WCW than WWE has used him.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's a nickname, prior to WCW. Raven calls him "Hak" the entire time in the Raven/Sandman shoot interview thing. Apparently, even Sandman's youngest son does too.

If you were having a conversation with him, Hak would be easier to call him than Sandman. Unlees you called him Sandy, which would probably result in a caning.

Yeah, i've heard him refer to himself as Hak a few times so I'm assuming it was a nickname.

The pool made that goldberg match. Goldberg + Pool surrounding the ring = match of the year.

I don't think WCW was saying that hardcore wrestlers were hacks. If WCW thought that, they wouldn't have ripped off WWE's Hardcore Division and championship.
