You know, I actually had to search Wikipedia (under Umaga, scroll down to find out who beat him) to find out his name. And he's the IC Champ. How wrong is THAT?
It's one thing to give the title to a new guy - hell, Carlito one it on his first match but he was awesome on the mic and people really got behind him early on. But to give it to some generic, smiling "nice guy" who looks like he should be a 1988 jobber is something else.
I personally see this idea failing big time, and it'll damage the IC belt even further. Is there a IC match at One Night Stand? Was there one at Judgement Day?
And unless they do something pretty special with Marella, I don't think it'll be long before he starts getting the Die Rocky Die treatment.

This could go either way, really. Depends on how they book Santino.
The only thing they're doing wrong now is using him at the expense of other wrestlers. Chris Masters is bound to be damaged by losing to a guy who isn't supposed to know how to wrestle.

I don't think it depends on how they book Santino as if they book Santino. Seriously, he's already lost in the shuffle. And he's a damn good wrestler, check his OVW stuff.

As they're booking him now, I could give a 2 craps about the guy.

In 2006 before Jeff Hardy came back, they were REALLY getting the IC division exposure. Nitro, Shelton, Carlito, Masters, Orton, Crazy--that's a superb mid card title division right there. Unfortunately, after someone's "brilliant" plan of having Hardy bury Nitro and Umaga bury Hardy, only for Umaga to lose the title to a nobody like Marella, they've killed the division. Maybe they should give the guy that led a good division the belt back? No, they'd rather give it to a guy that I actually forgot exists.

Yet, that STILL wasn't good enough reason to keep it.

Much like Taz in ECW, this goof had a gimmick where people saw pasted the fact he wasn't a very good wrestler. He worked the character very nicely, and it would have made him meant something, well, at least more than he is currently...but nope, now he's just a dork in red shoe. They should just let the dude cut more promos in his funky faux accent, at least he'd be entertaining then, except boring us with his 18 ways of being awful matches.

A wrestler should NEVER win a belt on his first night. Especially some loser from the crowd who got a flukey win.
The only exception I can think of is when Jerry Lynn won the LHW title on HEAT on his debut, but that cool because he was so much better than anyone else in the division.

I marked for the win over Umaga but since then he's done absolute s***. Either get the title off of him or do something fast to try and get some credibility to the I-C title as it's counterpart on Smackdown is easily worth more at this point.

There was no gimmick, there was no character. His persona was just a natural effect of being a guy that beat people up what do you qualify as making you a good wrestler?

Poor IC title, gone are the days of people like bret, Shawn, Steve, and Razor holding it. In 2006 before Jeff Hardy came back, they were REALLY getting the IC division exposure. Nitro, Shelton, Carlito, Masters, Orton, Crazy--that's a superb mid card title division right there. Uh, this happened WHILE Jeff was there too, unless the six-pack challenge that Nitro won and the Fatal 4-way Jeff won (and numerous other matches and squabblings and what-have-you) don't count. Ok I guess I can't really argue with this point though. Nitro I don't think was really that buried, they were moving him on a good track where he seemed to be getting fed up with the way things were...and then they went NOWHERE with it.

From what I remember Jeff's reign was either him destroying Nitro the same way every match OR having himself lose to Umaga. Nitro's reign focused on him, Shelton, Carlito, Orton, and to a lesser extent, Masters and Crazy.
