I can't be the only one who misses Battle Bowl. I still break out my Starrcade 91 video everyonce and a while and watch the first.
It was a great idea.
40 Wrestlers.
20 Teams.
Winners go to a battle royal (Sadly not with cheese).
It helped new guys team with big stars and get noticed. It allowed for partner to face partner, like Michael PS Hayes and Jimmy "Jam" Garvin on separate sides in the very first match).
Of course that part was hurt later on when WCW stopped trying and teams ended up being the same partners or had two teams basically switch a partner.
The Two ring idea was neat, even if not pulled off that well as it ended up being that someone was eliminated from ring one if they went into ring two instead of being thrown over the ropes.
The whole PPV kept my attention, which is hard to do now-a-days. There were some "given" matches like Steve Austin/Rick Rude Vs. Van Hammer/Big Josh, but having the two midcarders in there with the then TV (Austin) & US (Rude) champions gave them some credibility.
It also provided some memorable scenes, like poor Buddy Lee Parker getting beat senseless by Abdullah the Buther with a broken mop, crawling to the ring (As the crowd chanted his name), finally making it to the match (which was in the second ring), getting immediately tagged in, and losing to Ricky Steamboat. I was always a "mark" for Sgt. Buddy Lee after that.
I'd love to see it return, but it wasn't one of Vince's ideas so he probably won't use it.
