The WWE is sitting on a potential gold mine with CM Punk and John Cena. I didn't really think about it until today when I was on WWE.com, but this could really be a huge angle.
IMO, not since Hart/HBK were there two wretlers that were on total opposite ends of the spectrum. On the one hand, you have John Cena, the merchandise shilling, superstar corporate celebrity with the WWE's backing. He's got his fans but he's always had his detractors too. he's a decent wrestler but nothing phenomanal.
on the other hand, you've got CM Punk. Punk, with his MASSIVE internet cult following, unique style and look, isn't exactly the corporate favorite but there's just something about him that gets the fans rallied behind him.
What got me thinking about this match? On WWE.com's "5 Questions with the Champ" segment, Cena received a letter about CM Punk. A fan wanted to know Cena's opinion of him. Cena's response was something along the lines of "I'm not gonna say I like him, but there's a certain amount of respect that has to be had for him." I found this interesting. In fact, it reminded me of The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin's attitude about each other.
What would really make this an interesting angle is the fans. I've noticed that you will almost NEVER find someone that is a fan of both Punk and Cena. There's just something about both of them that attracts a different fan base. And WWE could really use this to their advantage.
So WWE should take a risk. CM Punk gets a legitimate reaction from crowds, as he's not shoved down their throats like other wrestlers. Let this build slowly, over the course of the next year, finally culminating at WM 24. It'd be an interesting angle to see, and WWE could make some real cash off of it.
