The big new gimmick match announced Monday during the special is Elevation X, which is basically Ultimate X with scaffolds replacing the cables. In typical TNA fashion, the two men who will compete in the first Elevation X match aren’t two crazy high-flyers, but rather AJ Styles and the near 300-pound RHINO. I guess that at least mean AJ will have a strong man to catch him when he jumps off the scaffold.
Steiner had his head busted open by an errant Joe chairshot at the PPV, but ended up OK.
Angle, who needs to be barred from media appearances, was on WOCM 98.1 in Ocean City, MD last week and within five minutes got in all his highspots, including claiming he’d been clean for two years from pain pill addiction; had made more money for WWE than any wrestler over the past six years; liked TNA because it was “more of a wrestling show than a circus act” (that may actually be the most absurd things he’s said yet, which is covering a lot of ground); and that he’ll be fighting in MMA for EliteXC on Showtime. EXC knew nothing about this. “Nothing is currently in the works yet with Kurt,” we were told, “however we would be interested in exploring the opportunity.” Nobody should be holding their breath waiting for this fight.
Angle on Scott Farrell’s show said he used to take 65 Vicodin a day (expensive habit), including 18 just to get out of bed. He said Eddy once got pissed at him and shot in for a single leg, and Angle took him down, choked him, and later asked why he would ever think of leg-diving an Olympic champion. Eddy reportedly replied, “Because I’m f***ing stupid.” Don’t know if the specifics are true, but that sounds so true. Kurt said this Sunday’s match with Christian would be match of the year. Well, add one more to the 16 he thought he had last year. He said Joe did the 40 yard dash in 4.5 and had a 44 inch vertical leap. He said again that he was going to fight for EXC. He said he wanted three fights before age 40, and that he couldn’t get down to 205 and therefore needed a special weight class just for him. Whatever happened to beating 300 pound men?.
After Kip and BG James both had negative things to say about the company in interviews (including Kip saying that if WWE offered him enough money he’d leave), TNA issued a memo saying that all interviews must now be approved by management.
Wacky Impact stats for this week. Depending upon which unfortunate person was doing the counting, there were either 43 or 44 performers on the show not counting announcers, referees and security (which would have put it well over 50). Only 12 were in matches. They had 40 minutes of TV time of which 6:30 total was devoted to professional wrestling. In that 6:30 there were three matches and only one had a clean finish.
TNA is reportedly trying to get licensed in the state of Kentucky, possibly to run shows at the Louisville Gardens.
The Christy Hemme conference call for TNA went a whopping 20 minutes. Most go well over an hour. And even in that 20 minutes, she really had nothing to say.
Arena Coliseo on February 6th saw Satanico & Mictlan & OGUN~! (brother of GROON XXX, just as horrible) beat Okumura & Alex Koslov & Emilio Charles Jr. God I hope this airs on Guerreros del Ring. Main was Heavy Metal & Rey Bucanero & Dos Caras Jr. beating Atlantis & Ultimo Guerrero & Sangre Azteca. Azteca subbed for Tarzan Boy who no-showed two more dates this week. The fact that he hasn’t been reported dead or missing or fired suggests that perhaps CMLL is booking him elsewhere in the country for higher-paying gigs (they’re basically both a promotion and a booking office). DQ finish as usual.
Arena Coliseo on the 11th was so packed that they opened up the upper deck, which has been closed to the public since about 1996. The building was put up in 1942 to seat 8,800 fans, but structural damage caused them to block off the upper deck for years. This show drew 7,000, so they had to find somewhere to put the overflow. Thankfully, nothing collapsed. Main event obviously involved Mistico, who beat Black Warrior in a singles match that went 30 minutes. La Mistica finish.
CMLL on February 9th before 10,000 was headlined by Los Perros del Mal beating Los Guerreros del Atlantida in a non-title match, setting up a title match for down the road. The challenge, by Perro Jr., was apparently ten minutes long and was so great that everyone just sat there in silence and listened. People were still raving about it a week later. Match was said to be very good. Los Perros will almost certainly win the belts in exchange for Perro losing his hair to Mistico next month. Aguayo turned his ankle legit in this match, so hopefully it wasn’t a break. Dr. Wagner & Dos Caras (subbing for Shocker, who no-showed, sparking more WWE rumors) & Rey Bucanero beat La Park & Marco Corleone & Black Warrior in the main event, but the semi-main was the real main. Match went less than 9 minutes.
Santo is claiming that Guillermo del Toro (director of Pan’s Labyrinth, which is in the running for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Film, and is one of the best movies I seen all time all my life) is talking with him about doing a movie about his father’s life called El Enmascarado de Plata.
Solar is also making a movie this fall called Las Calles Sin Nombre.
AAA is in the midst of running a AAA Tag Team Tournament.
They’re claiming both Kurt Angle and Rey Misterio will appear at Rey de Reyes on March 18th at El Toreo. Don’t hold your breath on the latter.
According to an article in the Allentown Journal, Bam Bam Bigelow was down to living on a $700-a-month social security disability check when he passed away, which clearly was not enough to pay his mounting bills. His girlfriend “would later tell police about what she viewed as his increasingly paranoid behavior. A recently purchased hand gun was sitting, unloaded, on top of the microwave. Still, Bigelow had been attending church with her, was catching up on his child support, and seemed optimistic about putting his life back together.” It’ll be several more weeks before results of the toxicology tests come back. It should also be noted that when Vince McMahon heard about his financial issues and the fundraiser that was held to raise money for his burial, he paid for the entire New Jersey funeral. You can say what you will about Vince McMahon, and much is valid, but this is far from the only thing of this nature that he has done, and he’s also been responsible for a lot of good things that nobody has ever heard about.
Brooke Hogan is moving to LA. Guess that confirms we’re not getting another season of Hogan Knows Best.
Insane Clown Posse, who are insanely great promoters, are planning a Juggalo Championshit Wrestling tour using Vampiro and Great Muta among others.
Speaking of Vampiro, he was hospitalized for a few days last week. At first they were very worried and thought it was a stroke, but then determined that he was just suffering from exhaustion and dehydration. He was told he needs to slow down, but is otherwise OK.
FIP in Florida, booked by Gabe Sapolsky, is adding a FLORIDA HERITAGE TITLE. They’re doing a tournament on March 10th in Crystal River presided over by Mike Graham, who is OK’ing the usage of the name Battle of the Belts, which his father Eddie used when promoting supershows in the area in the mid-80s. Tournament features heavyweight champ Roderick Strong, Mark and Jay Briscoe (tag champs), Shingo, Delirious, Erick Stevens, Larry Sweeney and an eighth man to be determined.
Regarding comments by Hulk Hogan on Bubba the Love Sponge that he was interested in going to WSX, I think even people in the company realize that the chances of this happening are about zero. Hogan is WWE for life, even if Vince McMahon hates him this week. He’s had many opportunities to leave, most notably to head to TNA, but even when those rumors were out there most people knew it was never going to happen. He was willing to work for New Japan back when New Japan was a force in the 80s and early 90s, and he was willing to go to WCW for gigantic money. He was never going to go to TNA and he’s never going to go to WSX. With that said, WSX is said to be very interested in the possibility of perhaps getting Nick Hogan. We’ll see what happens there. I think it would be a fantastic acquisition and Nick would be a better fit there than probably anywhere else at this point, but Hulk is obviously very protective of the opportunities that his children get in the entertainment world, and I strongly suspect the Hulkster is expecting Nick to be WWE for life if he ever gets into the business.
MTV made the decision this week to axe the Friday night WSX “sneak previews”, which were scheduled to air throughout the season. From now on, the “real debut” is the real debut, Tuesday nights at 10:30 PM EST head-to-head with the second half hour of ECW. MTV was said to be very high on the third episode and didn’t want to split the rating between Friday and Tuesday. The show is headlined by Los Pochos Guapos vs. Luke Hawx & Alkatrazz in a Tables, Ladders & Cerveza match. The TV Guide Channel pushed the show all weekend under “What to Watch This Week”.
