Jed Shaffer ~And hey, let's not forget how the angle got Robert Remus legit, life-threatening heat. Yeah, getting death threats=bad angle. Actually I know Sarge feared for his life and his family's but I've heard Terry Funk say that he's been physically attacked by fans(maybe stabbed) and he took some sort of pride in that-of course noone wants to get hurt, but he felt he was really playing his role as a heel very well to elicit that kind of response from someone

I thought Sarge's new finisher during his Iraqi sympathizer days was the Camel Clutch?
Anyway, I remember back in '91, when I used to have a subscription to WWF Magazine, they had a bit in it after SummerSlam '91 where they wrote about how, after the show (maybe at a house show), General Adnaan (his "Iraqi manager") put him through a "court martial" for not being able to beat Hogan. They even had a picture to go along with it.
Sarge then started cutting those "I want my country back!" promos in front of the Washington Monument and whatnot, and soon saved Duggan from a beat down and turned face.

Yeah, he did use the Camel Clutch... I believe the Iron Sheik (sorry... Colonel Mustapha) taught it to him.
Yes... Bob Remus didn't know the secret of the camel clutch, which is odd for three reasons:
1 - C'mon, he's just sitting on a guy's back and pulling back on his chin... WHAT secret?
B - He had a storied feud with the Iron Sheik. You don't think that he realised the secret during that feud (see 1, above)?
iii - If he didn't know the secret, how was he supposed to BREK HIS BECK!... MECK HIM HIMBLE!... F**K H** A**!

You just don't write a threatening letter, drive to the PO, buy a stamp and mail it in the heat of the moment. That's pre-meditated, legitimate, dangerous behavior. Jed Shaffer ~Except for my love letters to Lauren Graham. And if she'd lift the TRO, she's realize it.

But listen to the stories Bill Watts tells about his feud with Bobo Brazil in the 70s, and how that played out for him in heavily black audiences like Washington DC. It seems that around 1990 was the tail end of when that sort of thing could work. I mean, the only way someone could get heat like that today would be a "Weekend At Eddie's" angle of "comedy" vignettes to feud with Mysterio or Chavo.

Part of it too was that it was not wrestling as we (we being pre-teens who were introduced to wrestling as Lil Hulksters) knew it. Slaughter was really the first heel champion in over 6 years. Andre had it for 2 minutes. Savage turned mid-reign close to WM5. So the WWF being in the hands of a bad guy was something new.
Also, the Iron Shiek. Hilarious. Someone from Tehran, Iran was siding with someone playing an Iraqi sympathizer when Iran and Iraq just fought an 8 year war.

I hated his reign because he ended the Warrior's title reign. At age 7 I was a little Warrior!

No, I loved Slaughter's Iraqi gimmick. I can't explain why, I guess I just thought it was cool. Which is odd, because I recall being terrfied the world was gonna end and I recall the morning I awoke after everything started in Iraq the joy I felt that the world didn't end.
When I was 7, I didn't really think about whether or not the angle was tasteless, Slaughter was just a bad guy.

i just think it was too short I really thought he should have beaten Ultimate WArrior sooner, like say "survivor series" and have slaughter turn during Thanksgiving, that would have made his turn way bigger.. Slaughter got cheap heat, he got real heat, and he got WHITE HEAT. Slaughter was an awesome heel, wrestled a very boo-able style, and he's a friggin legend. I hated it, because I wanted Sarge to go back to beating up Cobra

I believe on an episode of Wrestling Challenge, Jim Duggan was facing one of the Nasty Boys and they doubled up on him, then out from the back came Sgt. Slaughter for no apparent reason to run them off and I think they shook hands, and he was suddenly a face again. He later gave some sort of interview with Mean Gene at his "base" or whatever where he apologized for everything he did and said he just wanted his country back. I remember that. It was so weird to see a guy his size looking like he's about to burst into tears. "I WANT...MY COUNTRY BACK!"
