Benoit has been a face since about April 2001. Over 6 fricken years!
Remember how brilliant his character was as a heel in 2000-2001?
As a young mark, I absolutely HATED him, but really appreciated him too. If he turned heel, a push would definately be on the cards, maybe even a world title run like Booker got.
As a heel, Benoit doesn't need any mic skills, and doesnt need to play the crowd. He would get twice as much heat and response from the fans if he turned heel.
I am not some huge Benoit fanboy but the man deserves another run at the top while he can still go, and I feel he's got to be a heel to be able to do this.
What do you guys think?

I'd be interested. Might finally get us that feud with Taker.

Eh not so much. In his career he has shown not to be an effective heel. Hes a quiet, super-serious bad ass. That works as a face. The no-nonsense brawler/technician is a face role in wrestling.

Tell me, do you think turning a wrestler from face to heel is like a light switch, one you can turn on and off?
What would make Benoit turn from a fan-respected favorite into a hated heel? Benoit's kayfabe schtick can't be that he woke up one morning and realized that being good sucks(though knowing WWE, thats possible).
I agree with KEJB. Benoit is so over as a face(and with my generation, who grew up with him being a cult hero of the WCW mid-card of the late 1990s)....there is nothing he can't do that won't make us wanna hurt him.
Unless he kills baby seals, then I might despise him.

Benoit has been over like Grover as a face for a long time now, and I think he's at the "Undertaker/Flair phase" of his career: no matter what he does, short of eating a baby on TV, he's gonna get cheered.

A 'heinous', 'cowardly' and/or 'dispicable' act on a face and/or diva can turn almost anyone heel But for someone like Benoit, who, as you've said is well respected by the marks and smarks alike, perhaps a sort of 'slow burn' heel turn would work? Like I said, the only way I can see him getting anywhere near the main event scene again is as a heel

Like I said, the only way I can see him getting anywhere near the main event scene again is as a heel Ohhhh so thats the point of this thread. I see. Hey, I love Benoit...but he won't be headlining Wrestlemania again, unless its because of a seriously bad talent vacumm caused by injuries. Again, you have any suggestions for a "Slow-Burn" heel turn? If anything, thats why his program with MVP is working so far. Benoit is the little-spoken Canadian wolverine crippler who enjoys pain for breakfast. MVP is a flashy arrogant Terrell Owens-like prima donna who wants the gold the easy way: CHEAT. A feud of Contrasts.

Just turn him onto a heel environmentalist like Ludvig Borga.
He could rename the Crossface the 'Tree Hugger'.
Cole: The Tree Hugger applied to The Undertaker! OH MY!

I think WWE has tried a heel Benoit at least twice. It has never even been close to over. Its a safe bet that they know he is in his most effective role.

Just turn him onto a heel environmentalist like Ludvig Borga. I'll do you one better. Just have him say : "Canada is better than you." INSTA HEEL HEAT!

What? Speaking of environmentalist.....you all remember when William Regal was doing those retarded "Man's Man" promos? This Liverpool-brawler now a denim-wearing, tree-splitting frontierman. Your laughing means that you do remember.

ITs like ripping a poor kid's autograph book. "Meh." Edge works with that Canadian-nationalist stuff because of him using all that as an excuse for his schtick as the dip-S*it. Better yet, what if Edge and Benoit teamed up if Benoit was on RAW? Then I could see the Pro-Canada stuff working.

I would like him be kind of a character that, like The Undertaker was, the respected master who isn't really interested in titles and has more of a part-time schedual, and would take on any comer if he was called upon.

Ideas for a slow burn heel turn?
Something like the way the Carlito/Flair angle is playing out now. Benoit teaming up with a strong face (Rey Mysterio for example, those kids love him) Success at first, but little by little, week after week, miscommuications occur. Soon they are the reason for each person losing big matches.
Even though the majority of these faults are Benoit's fault, he constantly blames his partner and eventually attacks him (insert viscious over exageraated beating that ends with a Crossface that needs 8 refs to stop it here) Micheal Cole screams 'heinous' over and over agian and JBL gives the heelish 'well Benoit is right to do this' explanation.

I got it...
Move him to Raw, and have him say he's looking to reform the Horsemen. Flair tells him no, the Hosemen are best left in the past. CROSSFACE BAH GAWD. Benoit tells the crowd that he's going to reform the Horsemen whether Flair wants it or not. HIT THE MUSIC! Out comes MONGO McMICHAEL and PAUL ROMA. Benoit says one more to go.
"Our newest member is a talent unlike anything we've ever seen...he will take the Horsemen to heights never before seen under old man Flair..."
THE GREAT KHALI COMES OUT KEENG
The New Horsemen run roughshod over the Raw roster and are remembered as the greatest stable ever.

No way! Benoit is one of the top faces in the company. He constantly gets one of the top pops at every show. I think they should have Taker/Benoit face vs. face, to set up a champ Benoit vs. heel Batista or Booker program.
