What if JBL hadn't received the sudden push in early 2004? I remember at the time thinking the I would have much rather seen William Regal get the main event spot to feud with Eddie Guerrero. I think Regal would've been comparable to JBL as far as charisma goes, and the match quality would've been far superior.

Match quality from a wrestling stand point may have been better BUT very few deliver a great heel promo like Mr Layfield! And at the time I remember being really impressed with Eddie vs JBL at Judgment Day.

Meh.
I think JBL really turned out to be a diamond in the rough for the WWE. They had him for so many years as Justin "Hawk" Bradshaw, Blackjack Bradshaw, Acolyte Bradshaw, etc. and he really stood out as JBL because it was so different from what he did in the past. Regal probably couldn't pull off the same type of heel as JBL, he would have been snobby and British.
Don't get me wrong, I think Regal is very talented, but I don't know that he could have garnered the same heat JBL did as a cowardly turncoat. He never really has. Also, at that point in his career, I think he had already cemented a gimmick and effectively pigeonholed himself to the point where we'll never see him as anything else (we saw how well the "real man's man gimmick worked...).
While match quality may have been better, I don't think the crowds would have given Regal the same hate that drove JBL's big run.

I thought WWE was crazy when they put the belt on JBL, but JBL turned out to be fantastic in that spot.

i'm with him^^ Also JBL is one of my favourite champions of all time. One of my favourite heels of all time and personally i like a heel champion more than a face champion because it's more entertaining that way and people seem more into it.

Didn't JBL say that Eddie is the one who pushed for JBL to be a main eventer when they didn't believe in him? I miss JBL in the ring. He was f***ing great.
