Sorry to dig up my own thread, but I've been doing more thinking about this after reading the Punk/Nitro smack talk piece that went up on WWE.com today. (www.wwe.com/shows/thegreatamericanbash/exclusives/nitropunklifestyle)
Punk playing skee-ball at Chuck E. Cheese? That's a pretty good line. Why don't they HAVE HIM SAY IT instead of TELLING us he said it on the WEBSITE?
We all know his mic skills are medicore, but they're not going to improve without practice. Actually, for that matter, they could do a taped promo to air during ECW, and it would play into his gimmick. Say that Nitro can't be bothered to hang around when he's not actually in a match because he's out rubbing shoulders with K-Fed or whoever (that went nicely with the "Have him think he's more Hollywood than he really is" idea some have suggested). Have him show up in a limo just before his matches - unless they're gunshy about limos in general, now. Give him pyro for his entrance - sure, in RAW and SD, everybody has it, but in ECW, with its low-key entrances, it would set him apart.
I like the idea of giving him an assistant/manager. Let that guy do most of the live talking for him at first to cover for his mic skills and because he's supposed to be too cool to talk to the little people. Then gradually as Nitro gets more practice, move him into the foreground and switch the assistant to the abused underling role as was proposed.
And yes, never have him willingly do another extreme rules match. Besides the possibility of it damaging the merchandise, have him adopt the attitude that since he beat the "hardcore legend" Dreamer in one extreme rules match, he's proved himself there and doesn't need to do it again. The weak, flukey ending to the Dreamer match will add heat for this.
There's just so much potential here and so many things they could do to get him over. Unfortunately, I don't think they actually care about getting him over since he's only there to keep the belt warm until Punk inevitably wins it. But people will care about Punk winning a lot more if he beats somebody who actually matters.
