I always thought managers were there to do promos and speak for wrestlers who either didn't speak, or had poor mic skills. I thought the last really great example of this was James Mitchell being Abyss' manager in TNA. Abyss doesn't talk, so Mitchell did all the talking for him.
Meanwhile in WWE, managers clearly are not wanted by the writers. If anyone deserved a manager, it's Lashley. He's a monster of a man, who's only real shortcoming is his ability to give good promos. So if WWE gave him a manager to speak on Lashley's behalf, all Bobby would need to do is go out and wrestle while looking intimidating. Instead, WWE had Lashley giving these 10 minute promos which accomplished nothing except make Bathturd a household word on this forum.

True. Lashley got to speak on his own and so his weird voice was made known to the world in a long series of promos of variating hilarity.

The thing is so many of the talented in ring wrestlers need a mouth to speak for them at the moment in the wwe.
Shelton and Lashley are obvious, but also the likes of Snitsky, Charlie Hass, John Morrison, The Majors, Chris Masters & Kenny to name a few.
Plus just because you are good on the mic doesn't mean a manager wouldn't benefit you. Rick Rude was gold on his own, but with Bobby Heenan he was downright brilliant.

Managers would work as long as the people they are managing need a manager. Shelton for example, can not work the mic very well. They gave him 'Momma' and he got a push and the crowd was into it. Granted, it was Momma that got the reaction, but a manager has to be able to get a reaction because the person they are managing cant manage it on their own. Manager with charism + Wrestler with some talent = good crowd reaction and push. I just remember the first show or two she was around. She TOTALLY hammed it up, screaming, "DESTROOOYYY HIM, SHELLLTONNNN!!!" But seriously, I certainly hope that WWE still has at least a tiny interest in using managers for quite awhile, for selfish reasons, of course.

If we had real managers again, that'd mean we'd have stables again...
And if we had stables again and stable wars... then I'd be happy.
So, by the law of what we will call July 2007... I am not allowed to be happy so we'll never see it happen again. Stupid f***in july.

I'm upset enough that managers aren't used as much anymore, but what is wrong with one guy being the manager for multiple, often unrelated guys? I got the re-mastered version of WrestleMania III the other week, and I was shocked by how many wrestlers were looked after by one guy...
Bobby "The Brain" Heenan (3): Hercules, Harley Race, Andre The Giant "The Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart (5): Adrian Adonis, The Hart Foundation, Danny Davis, and Honky Tonk Man Slick (3): Butch Reed, The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff Mr. Fuji (2): Don Muraco and Bob Orton
What would be wrong with, say Estrada, being manager of both Umaga, and The World's Greatest Tag Team? I'd have no problems with that.

Funny you should mention those guys since they're all relative newcomers to the business and most were only trained by the WWE. The difference between them and guys like Shawn Michaels, HHH, Jericho, etc. are that they haven't had enough experience working a lot or being in a position of having to improv their own promos. They're mostly just reciting a script
