Punk will win at SummerSlam...
...and the show will go downhill.
Why? Because Punk is the only person on the roster who's truly over, and that's been consistent since...I hate to say it, but pretty much since Lashley left. It hasn't changed despite respectable efforts to push other guys.
Therefore, they can't afford to put the belt on anybody else. At least, not for a good while.
In short, ECW will become The Punk Show. And I'm not talking about the most over guy being the centerpiece of the show, that's normal. I'm talking like Raw is The Cena Show.
And I don't care how good you think Punk is (assuming you haven't already soured on him like some people have) - he's not good enough to carry 60 minutes of TV every week by himself.
Oh, sure, the crowds of marks will like it, because Punk is the only guy in ECW they care about (or can even recognize) anyway, so seeing him go from forgettable successful feud to forgettable successful feud week after week will be fine with them.
Morrison who? Elijah what? Never heard of this Cor Von guy you mentioned. Just tell me who Punk's beating this week.
Ratings may even go up, and WWE will see this as evidence that they're doing the right thing. Which, of course, they will be, really.
But the ECW that has, against all odds, established itself as the best of the three WWE brands for a lot of "serious" wrestling fans such as myself over the past few weeks will slowly fade away. Mark my words, within a few months, unless some miracle happens and somebody else in ECW manages to get over (or, you know, they take it out of Smackdown's shadow), people on this board will be getting fed up with ECW and looking at this period as the relative good old days.
