Hey ya'll, just got back from Summerslam not too long ago. It was my first live PPV in quite some time, so I decided to go all out and spring for floor seats. I ended up 5 rows from ringside. Great right? Yea, not when you're on the camera side. Not only did I have to deal with the usual folk marking out because they were on tv all night, I was also sitting 3 rows behind The Sign Guy, so all the entrances were blocked by his large (but funny) signs.
Got to the arena by 6, and we were forced to wait outside for an hour before they opened the doors. So idiotic (it's New Jersey, what can I say) because by the time you got through security, hit the john and grabbed something to eat, you barely make it to your seat before the dark match starts.
Dark match was Cade & Murdoch going over Londrick. A decent match that got the crowd pumped up. C&M went over.
Kane vs. Finlay was a decent opener. Nice to see Kane pick up a PPV win again.
Mr. Kennedy was super over, Carlito was just kinda there, and Umaga got a few cheers but mostly people not sure if they should cheer or boo the guy. Ending was a downer since most of the crowd expected Kennedy to pick up the title.
Nothing needs to be said about the Diva's battle royal aside from the fact that The Sign Guy got a couple great reactions from the Divas from his sign asking them to "settle" things in his motel room later tonight. The sign had a key hanging from it. Mickie read it and laughed, and Victoria rolled her eyes, to name a few.
I was really shocked by the crowd's reaction to Morrison vs. Punk. They were almost dead silent aside from a few scattered CM Punk chants. When Morrison won you could have probably heard a pin drop in the arena.
During the Hardy/MVP segment, a couple guys in my section started chanting for Austin before the rest of the crowd got the idea. Hardy was cool enough to give us a little head nod and a smile, which all but let us know he would be showing up. Austin got a huge pop, and it was erie seeing him in the exact same arena 10 years after he broke his neck at Summerslam 97.
King Booker had a ton of heat, and HHH got a huge pop. After his win, he hung out in the ring for a bit to just take in the moment. He seemed to be really touched by the warm welcome, and i'm sure he's glad to be back into things again.
The Batista/Khali match was a huge stinker, and my section was so bored that we started a stupid wave signal that hopefully was picked up on tv.
Throughout the entire show you got the vibe that we would be looking to slit Cena's throat, but honestly it wasn't too too bad of a backlash. The crowd was on fire through the entire main event. You could touch the tension with a knife. While some people think that the crowd was Orton 80% Cena 20% of worse, it was actually about even, if not more favoring Cena.
When Orton hit that RKO I probably marked the hardest I ever did at a live event. Sadly, 30 seconds later it was same old, same old and Cena retained the title.
I'm not sure how much of this ended up on the telecast, but Cena hanged out in the ring for a bit. He looked pretty pissed off at the crowd, as he grabbed a "If Cena wins, we riot" sign from some guy at ringside. He stood in the ring holding it, then signaled to a couple guys giving him the finger or thumbs down to enter the ring and face him. Of course no one did, but a few bottles and even a shirt was thrown his way.
And that was that. I got to take home my first PPV chair, which is a pretty cool piece of memorbilia. While most of my predictions ended up wrong, it's pretty refreshing to see the WWE throw us a curveball once in awhile. Complain about bad booking all you want, but if all of your predictions came true, you would just complain about the product being too predictable, right?
