After posting my RVD thread, I came to wonder about one of the oddest runs/pickups in wrestling history. The unveiling of Road Warrior Animal as the "mystery man" at WCW Sin 2001. I was just wondering, for those of you who followed the company at the time, were there any other possibilities/rumors for who the mystery man would be? And was Hawk in rehab/injured/on bad terms to not join back up with Animal? It was an odd pickup, I mean, there weren't too many big name talents to get at that time, but Road Warrior Animal, by himself nonetheless, was a really interesting choice.
And what was up with that horrible costume he wore? Looks like a 5 year old put it together.

Well, his brother was part of the booking team.

Well, his brother was part of the booking team. Almost forgot about that. That probably explains a lot of it then.

Hawk was supposed to join him after awhile and probably would have if WCW had survived, I think Hawk's heart was already giving him troubles at that time

It probably wasn't even favoritism either. t that point they were so much in debt and couldn't afford to spend tons of money, so Johhny probably called up Animal and asked him to come in for a run. But I don't know how much Animal was getting paid so I'm not sure if that was the case

I don't get it. At all. It's kind of a small horse, I mean what am I missing? Am I crazy?

I just remember thinking how totally nonsensical it was having Animal be the masked man

There weren't really much choices as Scott Steiner was during his "destroy all the babyfaces" stage and Sting, Booker, Goldberg were out.

I remember watching WCW at this time as it was the only option available
Boy was I surprised at Animal being the choice
And not in a good way

I liked when he was Chavo Guerrero's bodyguard for a little bit before WCW died. That way at least the "big guy" had a reason to be manhandling cruiserweights other than to "make him look good".

look for a video somewhere for the main event of Sin 2001 (it's the same match where Sid broke his leg), and you can see him come out and try to make something of the mess.

After being unmasked: thanks alot but I was more talking about the "horrible" outfit someone mentioned above...I wanted to compare the gear to his other stuff from previous runs

In all honesty, that's what I was referring to, the mask he had was like an old-school hockey/Jason mask over a black nylon one, just looked really cheap.

Yea because it ring attire wasn't much different. Still had the spikes and the normal LOD like pants. Only differents was a slinglet. He is a pic of him during the run.

Another note, he used Vince Russo's Iron Man rip-off theme.
It fit Animal a hell of a lot better.

Wasn't Iron Man the Road Warriors 80s NWA theme anyway? Didn't realize he used the "Russo knockoff" version too.

The masked man was originally planned to be Rick Stiener but then Russo just had to be all clever on us and SWERVE us with Animal.
Animal was hella fun though. He did a handicap match with three cruiserweights (I forgot who) and he spent most of the match just basically throwing them around like used trash. It was good television.
