Notes from a Konnan interview with Alex Marvez. He said he had a potential kidney donor coming down from Philadelphia in July, and if all went well he'd have a new kidney that month and be wrestling regularly in Mexico by the end of the year. He noted that just prior to doing this interview (June 7), he'd been jostled in the ring during an angle in Mexico and it knocked his dialysis tube loose, which nearly caused a medial emergency.
He basically said that wrestling in Mexico was so hot that he wanted to make all of his dates both there and in TNA, and had long-term plans of trying to get a lucha-style group going in the US. He did say he'd probably wrestle more in Mexico than in the US, since in the US it was all about what you could do in the ring whereas in Mexico they have respect for the aging stars and just want to see them appear as opposed to perform.
He said he was like Hogan in Mexico, which may not be far from the truth, and in fact in some ways, particularly today, he's bigger than Hogan. He said he had no idea how his kidneys went bad, saying it could have been from an infection or it could have been bruised during a match. He thanked the fans for helping raise $14,000 so far for his medical bills. "All I can say is, 'Wow!' All the sacrifices I've made -- the holidays I've missed because I had to work, the times I got screwed over and lied to by promoters -- this made it worth it.
The fans came through for me when my own company [TNA] didn't." He said he wasn't limping when he first came to TNA, but his hip problem got worse as time went on. TNA told him it didn't happen under their watch and thus they weren't going to pay for it. They did lend him money for the surgery and he now has to pay it back (same thing they did for Ron Killings and others). "What the owners do is take care of the top guys so the top guys band together and everyone else gets screwed that has a problem.
If something happens to a Kurt Angle or a Sting, they take care of them, so they don't care about the other guys. If they stood up and said, 'Thanks, but these are the guys we're making money with and we have to take care of them.' But it's almost like crap trickles downhill. You take care of the top guys, they're happy and content. We're never going to get a union going. All it would take is for the big guys to say, 'You can't keep screwing the people underneath.' I don't see anybody right now stepping up and doing that. It will take a special guy to stand up. I'm telling you: If I had a name in the U.S. like the Rock or Steve Austin, I would have done that a long time ago.
I have that type of clout in Mexico. I've gotten a lot of things to change there, but I don't have that same clout in the U.S." He went on a big rant about health care, saying he'd never been sick a day in his life, but then after he got his kidney problems he was turned down for health insurance by everyone. "You have to be healthy to have insurance and hope you do not get sick. A lot of people who are waiting until they get sick can't get any. In California, Governor Schwarzenegger is trying to do a thing where everyone can get affordable insurance and you can't be denied. This is one of America's dirty little secrets. Because of corporate greed, I went to Monterrey to have my hip operation.
In the U.S. it was a minimum of about $80,000 to $90,000. Down there, I got it done for about $30,000. My kidney transplant in the U.S., it would be between $100,000 to $120,000. In Mexico, it will be about $30,000. And don't be swayed by the fact it's Mexico and you think you're getting superior care here. You're going to get taken care of.
They have good surgeons, just like anywhere else in the world." He said he wanted LAX to be his legacy in the US as opposed to 3 Live Kru. "Pretty soon I will be leaving," he said of TNA. He said he was currently helping write and produce the AAA TV shows, and they'd made a lot of drastic changes with more to come. "I'd say there's a 70-percent change in 2008 that either with AAA or with another Latino network - and I'm negotiating with a couple of them - that you will see a Lucha promotion in the U.S. that will tour the whole U.S. like Vince does.
If you want to see Lucha now, you have to watch Galavision. If you want to see a match, you've got to go to Mexico or a city running Lucha. When we brought in guys to WCW, the Mexican invasion revolutionized wrestling. Now, you see Lucha incorporated into matches. We're going to bring all the Lucha stars to a fan base that can be incredible".
UK indy star Sweet Saraya was injured over the weekend in a match with Cheerleader Melissa. She fell down and landed knee-first one a Coke can, which acted as a razor and sliced through the main tendon in her knee. She underwent surgery and was told the diagnosis was not good, and her career may be over
WSX sent out a press release saying that Ricky Banderas had been stripped of the group's heavyweight title. Basically, he blew up a coffin to win the WSX Title, so they claimed he was being held as a person of interest in the death of Vince McMahon. Well, it's creative. At the very bottom it read: "Details involving the future of the WSX Championship and Wrestling Society X are forthcoming".
I guess it depends upon what you consider funny, but perhaps this story could better be described as absurd. Gene Gonzales, 49, a Washington Middle School teacher, was charged with child endangerment after he allegedly broke a 13-year-old disabled boy's arm by dropping the People's elbow on him. Ultimately, the victim said it was actually an unfortunate accident, and two physicians said the injuries were, seriously, NOT CONSISTENT WITH A PEOPLE'S ELBOW. Did they depose Rock, or, better yet, one of Rock's many victims? So anyway, Gonzales is off the hook.
ROH on June 22nd has Bryan Danielson & Nigel McGuinness vs. Takeshi Morishima & Naomichi Marufuji, Matt Sydall & Claudio Castagnoli vs. Briscoes for the Tag Titles, KENTA vs. Roderick Strong, and BJ Whitmer vs. Brent Albright in top matches. June 23rd in Chicago Ridge has KENTA vs. Danielson, Briscoes vs. Kevin Steen & Generico, and Nigel McGuinness vs. Chris Hero.
Perro Aguayo Jr., in all of his media interviews (and he has been doing a ton of them since winning Los Cincos Magnificos), has been challenging Mistico to a mask vs. hair match. The chances of this match happening anytime soon have dropped significantly since both guys are super hot and you don't want to beat and humiliate either of them. I
suspect the reason for the challenges is because it allows both Perro's and Mistico's names to be introduced to an even wider audience. That match would easily sell out a 50,000-seat stadium, and some would even say a 100,000-seat bullring. The key is you don't want to do it before the peak, but you also want to make sure not to do it too far after the peak
Lizmark Jr. and Black Warrior both no-showed CMLL spot shows in Monclova last week. The local promoter called CMLL and asked what the hell happened, and CMLL sent a detailed fax about how Lizmark Jr. had an elbow contusion that needed to be immobilized for ten days, and then would require ten more days of physical therapy, keeping him out of action until June 22nd. So the promoter said, well, where is Black Warrior? And CMLL responded that they had just been unable to locate him. MEXICO~!.
Vince McMahon's death made the cover of Box y Lucha this week.
