NWA Heavyweight Title Tournament Match Added To Showdown in CrisisLand!
Welcome to the dog days of summer, CHIKARA faithful. And what an exciting summer this will be. Over the weekend, we entered into discussions with our new friends at the National Wrestling Alliance to host not one, but TWO matches for their prestigious WORLD titles in CHIKARA rings. The first of which is an open challenge that NWA World Jr. Heavyweight Champion, "Lightning" Mike Quackenbush has issued for our "Maximum Overdraft" in Philadelphia on Sunday, August. We'll have plenty of news on that as the date gets closer and the NWA begins to delivers the message to the men they consider top contenders for the first shot at Quack's World Jr. belt.
But while we wait to see how the situation with the Jr. title unfolds, we can now confirm that on July 21st, in Wallingford, CT, CHIKARA will host a semi-final match in the tournament to crown a NEW NWA World Heavyweight Champion! And what two better men to be competing for the famed 10 lbs. of gold then our own Claudio Castagnoli and the returning Sicodelico, Jr.! These are two of the biggest, strongest, and most athletically gifted wrestlers ever to step foot in a CHIKARA ring and this match will pit them against each other for the first time ever. Usually, we're able to hypothesize about who holds what advantage, and what the competitors strategies might be, but these two are so evenly matched in almost every facet that we can't label this anything but a 50-50 tossup. And while that may leave us without much to write, it also guarantees that Wallingford, CT is going to be treated a surefire classic on July 21st. And we here at CHIKARA couldn't be more proud to be hosting it. Who will leave "Showdown In Crisisland" one step closer to the most prestigious title in wrestling history ?
Also just signed for Showdown In Crisisland is match that honestly leaves us here at CHIKARA with an uneasy feeling in our stomach. Ever since March's Time Will Prove Everything "The King of Diamonds" Eddie Kingston has been going farther and farther off the deep end, fueled mainly by his jealously of the fact that Hallowicked is often labeled as the "top graduate of the Chikara Wrestle Factory." Kingston has become more nihilistic and more vicious than ever with each passing match, and he's showing no signs of turning back at this point. So when King called the CHIKARA offices to discuss what he'll be doing in Wallingford on July 21st, his only interest seemed to be in finding an opponent that he could hurt and make an example of. His first suggestion was to be paired off against one of the still in-training students of the Chikara Wrestle Factory, which Director of Fun Leonard F. Chikarason shot down immediately. And after an ensuing 20 minute argument that showed all of us here at the office just how volatile Kingston really has become, an agreement was reached that seemed to placate King for the time being.
On July 21st, Eddie Kingston will go one-on-one with the newest GRADUATE of the Chikara Wrestle Factory, mat technician Tim Donst. Donst has put in some solid showings in his two CHIKARA appearances thus far, but this match is the equivalent of going from 0-to-60 for someone of Donst's experience level. Many would suggest to Donst that he not worry about winning so much as surviving when going up Kingston in this mindframe, but Donst seemed to be up for the challenge when informed of the match over the weekend. Can Tim Donst pull off the biggest upset of the year in Wallingford ? Or will Edde Kingston's increasingly violent tendencies try and destroy a promising young career before it even gets going?
The only way to get the answers, is by joining us LIVE in Wallingford, CT for Showdown in Crisisland!
