I've always heard that neither one of them have trademarked the name Sting, and that it also caused a scenario where the WWF at the time couldn't either. Why would the WWF try to copyright Sting?

That's BS. You can trademark things at any time, it's copyrights that get a little fuzzy.
Sting can be trademarked as a registered license in wrestling and I imagine he already has one.

I do believe that I heard that Steve Borden owns the name sting, but he's cool like that and doesn't bother Sting from the Police.
Unlike WWe and their mysterious attempts to thwart Sean Michaels despite him using that name for years.
