Sometime in the mid-'90s they switched Davey Boy Smith's announced hometown from Leeds to Manchester. I don't recall exactly when, although it may have been around the time of his heel turn in '95.
Just curious: Is there an obvious difference in status/class between Leeds and Manchester? I've been wondering if the WWF was trying to make DBS seem tougher, or more sophisticated, or to capitalize on a stronger fan base in Manchester. The cities seem to be roughly the same size.

I'm guessing that since they ran shows in Manchester it was to make him more of a home town guy.

I think Leeds does have a better reputation than Manchester. Therefore Davey = Hard Man.

Manchester is a larger city in England than Leeds. Plus it has more stadiums so it would make sense to change his hometown if he was becoming a face.

I think it was purely down to the fact Manchester is more famous and therefore more people in America would have heard of it than Leeds.
In terms of class/status, they're pretty much identical. I don't think you sound tougher if you come from one or the other. Both cities have their rough areas and both have their smart areas.
*nerd alert* As it goes there is a historic rivalry between Manchester and Leeds. It's a Yorkshire/Lancashire War of the Roses thing. Some of them are quite proud about it (older people really) so you could be in trouble if you got a Yorkshireman and someone from Lancashire mixed up.

Leeds won the top league title in football in '91, and manchester were the dominant team in the mid '90s too

Manchester is known as a bit of a dive, so I'd suspect they were trying to make him seem tough.

I'd have to agree I think more people in America will have heard of Manchester and there is a major rivalry between the two cities not quite up there with Manchester/Liverpool but pretty big.

They changed his hometown about 1,000 times, he calls London his hometown at Summerslam 92. I'm sure they eventually changed it to Birmingham for One Night Only.

Well William Regal was from about 5 miles from where I live (Midlands), but he's billed as Blackpool because he started his career there and there's a chance that Americans would've heard of the place. Guessing its similar with Davey Boy Smith, whom, incidentally, I the story of his middle name's origin- haha!
