Basically, WWEs distributor of DVDs in the UK is SilverVision. Part of the deal is that any WWF/WWE footage put out by SilverVision is then effectively owned by them like a set of master tapes.
Now, when Vince got sued by the Pandas, they had it that the WWF had to stop using the "F" in conjunction with the website and the like, so they stopped using it and had to drop all mention of the acronym WWF and the scratch logo (which is why it's still alright to use all other variations of the WWF logo and "World Wrestling Federation")
However, because SilverVision "owned" their copies of the Attitude Era WWF tapes, they weren't affected by the courts, and are therefore fine to market WWF scratch logo DVD's under the WWE Tagged Classics series

I find the superimposed WWE logo over the old scratch logo of WWF, with its ugly thick border so it covers the scratch logo completely to be far more irritating than the blurs could ever be.

Why couldn't the World Wrestling Federation just offer the World Wildlife Fund some money to change their name? It would cost too much. The Fund did offer Vince a deal where they could make a donation (rumored to be around $20 million) and keep the name but, Vince refused and lost. Wow! #1 example of Vince's Pettiness. I remember a while back there was a thread about "examples of Vince's pettiness", well I think it's hard to top that! Losing the identity of his company and having to alter years of footage from his most successful period just because he's too petty to make a donation.

no, Dylan(Hornswaggle) has onbly been Hornswaggle/Li'l Bastard in WWE. This is his first run with the company, I know.. he is from my home town here in Wisconsin. Sp did you ask his mom what it was like to sleep with Mr. McMahon? And why did she wait all these years? Enquiring minds want to know.

I seem to recall the estimated cost of the name change was in the end north of $400 M.

A deal should have been struck. Both the panda people and the sports-entertainers should have been able to use the name initials. The blurring of the logos looks ridiculous.

I wouldn't have done it, either.

I just wish Vince would have changed the domain name to worldwrestlingfederation.com and refer to the company on TV as the World Wrestling Federation instead of WWF. Would have saved him a lot of headache.

I wouldn't have done it, either. You call it extortion. I call it a cost effective cash settlement for a lawsuit that he ultimately lost, costing him roughly 20X that amount, as well as his company's identity. Let's not forget that this was not the first time that they had legal issues with the WWF. If he accepted this settlement, it would have not only ended the current lawsuit but prevented any future ones.

If it had been me, and I had lost the suit, I'd have changed the name back to the World Wide Wrestling Federation. The new website could have been www.f.com .

While I generally side with the WWF in this issue (no matter how much I enjoy wrestling, animal rights are more important to me), I still think it's ridiculous that they can't show past footage with the logo.
Regardless, if Vince was stubborn enough to change the name of his company, I always felt they should have just gone with "World Wrestling Federation." Keep the name but ditch the abbreviation. Call it the Federation for shorthand and come up with a new icon to use as a screen watermark.
Or, if the Invasion had been booked more successfully in 2001, have WCW win at WrestleMania 18. A face Shane McMahon bringing down his evil father's empire was the perfect ending to the way that storyline initially started, and since Shane was a face he would immediately rehire all the former WWF employees (minus Vince).
Either way, the name WWE still doesn't ring true to me.

Would have saved him a lot of headache. Sadly, had Vince simply kept referring to the company as World Wrestling Federation, then the agreement that stood for so long would have held. If he would have refrained even from calling it simply "the WWF" while in Europe, and had his perfoerms say the full name and not the initials, than the agreement would have stayed in place.

I think the WWF acted in bad faith and was just trying to extort Vince. No one really knows the numbers and the $400 million number seems ridiculous. Why do I think the WWF acted in bad faith? Their big gripe was that the wwf.com was a valuable asset. They sure maximized that asset once they got it. www.wwf.com/
