I know the dude is bin water as a wrestler and somehow lower than bin water as a human being. But I’m gonna own my shame and admit that, at the time it debuted, I liked the Funkasaurus. And looking at his debut match in the gimmick… youtu.be/ZISp3t5u79I?si=WriH0sHf6SbbZeuo…Dude is pretty serviceable in the role. I mean, I never got the impression, at least in this early stage, that he hated the gimmick. The shit-talking in between spots (“Should I get him?”, “My bad!”) was something hardly anyone else was doing at the time, and most importantly, he could still believably run the ropes and hit with actual impact. This was his sweet spot on a wrestling roster, the fun opening act that can warm up a crowd with a silly gimmick. But reports seemed to be that he didn’t want that, that he wanted more. But he wasn’t good enough for more, even here at the part of his career that most closely approximates to a “prime”. Genuinely felt like Cole and Lawler got ribbed too and weren't told this is what the gimmick would be, like they had no clue how to call the gimmick of the match Cole going "What is he DOING?" like four times is hilarious tbh Yeah, and Lawler wasn't oogling over the Naomi and the "Alicia Fox vs Mickie James girl" from Tough Enough like he normally would.

Just going through the article from Brandon Thurston and the observer newsletter reports from meltzer and on April 13th, 1987 he said the paid attendance was 90,873 for WM III. February 8th, 1988 it was stated by the WON as 90,000 paid when talking about WM IV and the fact the live gate would be higher for that upcoming mania. January 23rd, 1989 90,817 April 17th ,1989 90, 873 May 8th. 1989 90,817 PAID attendance December 18th, 1989 90,817 again February 19th, 1990 90,817 again April 20th, 1992 90, 873 January 15th 1993 90,817 February 8th 1993 90,817 PAID February 7th 1994 90,873 The November 14th 1994 issue is from what Brandon Thurston hard work is the first example he found of the 78,000 number being stated as the real number. The question is what changed ? Dave has said it was years later when Bresloff gave him the real number. This is not exactly Unsolved Mysteries. Lost in all of this "well Dave is lying because he hates WWE" talk is that Dave has outright said before that if the Silverdome could have held 93k, it would have that night. We have two sides to this argument, one is somebody who has been reporting on this stuff for 40 years and the other is a company that has admitted to lying about the attendance of multiple shows multiple times. I know which side I'm going with on this one.

I don't know if it's been said yet, but above anything, I think Bray was born about 50 years too late. He would have been absolutely phenomenal going up and down the territories, but above anything he would have made a lot of money in Florida taking turns with Sullivan to feud with Dusty. It's really a testament to how smart he was as a performer that he was able to continue evolving the Wyatt character in spite of it having a bit of a shelf life by design.

Macho Man had a positive Dark Side, but he had enough dark things around him like the failed marriage with Elizabeth and Elizabeth's death to make it work in the series. I don't think Bray has anything besides losing Brodie, which was not his fault at all.

In Foley's second book, he tells a story about his first book. Between his poor penmanship and his insistence Have a Nice Day! not contain any curses, Have a Nice Day was littered with references to the f***er. That was with his ghostwriter he was initially assigned, who also wrote about Mrs. Foley making the best spaghetti on Long Island. Foley fought with the publisher until finally they just let him write the damn thing.

I remember when Brodie died, Bray posted that this is not how it was supposed to end; it was supposed to end with them doing Wyatt spots in their 50’s in front of 20 people in a high school gym. Damn all of this sucks.

The Fiend is one of the biggest missed opportunities the company has had since WCW closed. It was foolish to have him even face Seth at that point, let alone lose to him like he did. That was absolute money before Hell in a Cell, and by all accounts it was primarily all Bray writing for himself.

What a horrible week for professional wrestling.
Terry Funk's death was very sad. But at the very least, he lived a full life and one that had more to show for it than a dozen or so people. And we knew the Funker was in bad shape.
Bray is an absolute tragedy.

I can tell you from the numbers side of things, the website I work for gets a lot less traffic from Twitter than it does from other social media. I'm sure if we just stopped posting on Twitter, it wouldn't really effect our bottom line that much and we're not the only site like that I'm sure.

Mick wrote in his book that Funk was so nice and giving to young wrestlers that he'd probably have somebody jump the casket and beat the body up at his funeral, so we're about to find out if that's the case I guess.

Even with the Switch tax I can sort of see the value of playing RDR on the go, but this just feels like a middle finger to PS4/PS5 owners. Forget them, them not releasing a PC port as part of this is just downright goofy. Nintendo levels of goofy business decisions.

every decision has been taken with malicious intent as no one could be that inept that not one single change has improved the company's product. I 100% disagree, he absolutely thinks this is all the right way. He wanted to do the same thing with PayPal and only didn’t because there were still adults in the room. Now, if he was used by the Saudis as a useful idiot and they stayed on to ensure he killed the company, I wouldn’t be shocked about that. But that would depend on if he has “disappeared” or not following Twitter’s inevitable bankruptcy.

Say what you will about Michael Eisner, but even in his wackiest as the head of Disney, I think he always understood that what made Disney magical were the ideas and creativity of its brightest minds. I think he’d take a look at AI just because he was fairly willing to try brand new things, but I don’t think he’d ever be on board with wholesale replacing that spark with some brain dead algorithm.

tbf to Vice, there's only but so much you can do when you're making a doc about a carny who has already demonstrably lied multiple times to you the last few years in other projects.

Textbooks will be written about the incompetence of these studios. Instead of settling for most of the money, these heads are letting their want of all of the money to cost themselves a big chunk of most of the money down the road. I think a big reason why the studios were talking up October in particular is because that will be the month student loan payments come due; those are going to be a helluva drain on many in the picket line

It absolutely is. I think needing to pay off big moments exclusively at WrestleMania only undermine every other PPV moment. I'll take unpredictable layouts as opposed to trying to wait for Mania. Few people can really say they are the poster child for an event, but CM Punk is the poster child for the MITB PPV. Meltzer's ratings are all sorts of stupid. 5 stars should have always been the standard, but for some reason he's gone above that multiple times, even though if you ask 95% of any wrestling audience, they wouldn't be able to tell you a single one of those matches. Also seems rather silly that he spends years railing on certain guys for certain styles, but still puts them in his HOF. If work rate is his thing, then let that be the catalyst for your HOF. The hall of fame is subscribers' votes, I believe, and at least with the over five star matches, he's said before to basically just consider them the same as a five, it's just for emphasis. I wanna say he gave Flair vs Steamboat the first over 5, so it's not meant to be taken that seriously. I do definitely disagree with some of his picks, but it's his rating system, his call. He does at least admit that it's limited to what he's seen, so that at house shows, guys like Flair, etc, probably have what would otherwise be dozens of 5 star matches. Dave has also said that he generally agrees your opinion if you’re within a star of him on a match. Sometimes he can be weird with the whole what’s the difference between 5 stars versus 4 and 3 quarters, but if you think back to those DX vs Undertaker matches at Wrestlemania right around this time, I remember he got a lot of crap for not rating any of them 5 stars and I think his ratings on those have aged well. Is there really that many people today arguing that first Taker-Michaels WM match was 5 stars? Back then it was the greatest Wrestlemania match of all time, but now people point to others in the years since or lean back into Bret vs Owen or Bret vs Austin. Subscribers decide the yearly awards. Dave decides HOF nominees and mails ballots out to historians, reporters, industry people, active wrestlers, retired wrestlers, etc.

Really just an incredible night. Even before the Cena-Punk match which was one of the best matches in company history up to that point, you also had Bryan win MitB and Christian walk away as world champion.

It's a boom for wrestling in general, but WWE itself is on a different level business wise.
