Ok was chatting with a few mates over a few beers last night and one of the boys asked "Do you think the WWE would have the balls to put a world title on a debuting star?"
We've had Carlito (US) Christian (LHW) Santino (Inter)
I really wasn't sure? It seems really unbelievable, but i could actually see it happening!

I sure hope not, what would that do for the prestige of the world title? And from a business perspective, why would fans want to tune in to watch a show based around someone they've never seen before?

Yeah, it's possible. I don't imagine it would be done with the WWE Championship, but maybe the World Heavyweight.
But they really would need to hype the guy for months and make him seem like a big deal.

It would be extremely hard to book I would think, it would be interesting to see if the company was in the crapper and they needed a severe shakeup, but the loss is likely too great from all angles. Even heel champions sell lots of merchandise etc.
A secondary championship is different, but the big one it'd be a real tightrope to get it over right and make it profitable, which is of course, the bottom line.
Anything can be done with buildup done correctly, but a debut, first time we see them type of thing (ala Santino) it is just too big of a risk, even today when the belt doesnt mean as much as it used to.

Thought they were maybe going to do that with Steiner when he returned. Thankfully they didn't.

Thought they were maybe going to do that with Steiner when he returned. Thankfully they didn't. He doesnt mean this. He means a cold debut, like Santino. If Steiner won it "debuting" with the WWE, its a totally different thing, because a lot of people know who he is already, he's an established star that had been in another major company (WCW). Same with people saying "it'd work if he was built up", thats not the point of the original post, it's a guy winning the belt, the very first time we see him.

Double Double E guy He's foreign, he'll get booed Then comes along the patriotic red white and blue Cena/Triple H/Hogan... You know the rest Winning the title in his debut? I see a guy like him starting out getting built up by squashing a bunch of low card guys. I'm thinking when he does debut, it'll be against Hacksaw to play up the whole foreign heel thing.

Well I did mention Carlito, he had many many promos before his actual debut. Man!, doing a "Santino" with the world title and succeding now that would be impossible

No one should have any kind of title match on their first night in.

They would have to be a monster with an established manager hyping his debut.
Sorta like when Kane debuted, he had months of build up and then when he appeared everyone was in awe of his size and look. Now tell me you wouldn't have been intrested in Kane winning the title when he debuted , I for one would have been.

I'd like to see someone brand new win the Royal Rumble out of nowhere. I had never seen Bob Backlund before 93. He randomly came into the Rumble at #2 (with no theme music ) and broke Flair's record from the year before.

i reckon that it could only be done in the same way they debuted kane (as someone said). maybe have a manager bring in a load of monsters, one after another, to take out a champion he had a grudge against (maybe a former client-turned face), and after a few have one get the win. dunno if it would work, but it would be interesting to say the least.

I doubt it would ever happen. It would cheapen the belt unless it were done very carefully. If, say, Samoa Joe jumped ship to the WWE, they could put it on him when he debuted, because he already is a credible threat.

Hulk Hogan won the WCW World Title in his WCW debut match. But everybody knew who Hogan was.

Mc Mahon would never put the top strap on a debuting talent; it would be acknowledgment that a competitor had a star as big or bigger than someone already in WWE. His ego simply would not allow it.
Flair, when he made his jump in the early 90's would have been the perfect candidate.
