I'm not ashamed to say I thought it was real(ish), like: sure they're not hitting eachother with all their power, but the outcome is a result of the moves.
Vince McMahon was just an announcer, while Jack Tunney was the President. I thought the owners were "some rich guys"
Roddy Piper was actually a Scotsman

For some time I thought: -Vince was just an employee -The Beverly Brothers were brothers -Edge and Christian were brothers -The Quebecers were just rehashing the "Mountie" gimmick, while the original one is gone -HHH's and Stephanie's marriage was a work (God, how I wish that was true!) -The Montreal Screwjob was a work -Lex Luger was the new Hulk Hogan -Jeff Jarrett actually records country music (they would probably do that today, see: Jillian) -Hulk Hogan sang "real American" -HHH and Regal will always be stuck in and fall back to their snob gimmicks -Glacier will have a huge impact and change WCW -The 123 Kid was a nice young man, who would never ever smurf a roided up Amazon on camera...

Chainsaw Charlie died in a match when his head got chainsawed off, that was quite a popular rumour.

I used to think Viscera and Rikishi were the same guy. What did you think when they teamed up together at Armageddon 1999 against the Hollys and when Rikishi booted out Viscera at the Royal Rumble.

That Kane and Kevin Nash were the same person.
That Kane really was a burn victim.
That WCW 1999 was more entertaining than WWE.

"Vince was just an employee"
The strong kayfabe at that time was amazing. Then again I was a kid and everything I cared about happened on tv. I didnt look much into backstage antics. Then you grow up and you learn everything.
Misconceptions...hmmm
WCW would be a major player for years to come. I thought that. I was wrong. It seemed like everything was poised for success.

that Undertaker really did kill guys with the Tombstone (this was before I knew about jobbers, I thought because you never saw them again they were legit dead)
That the actual wrestlers didn't do house shows they just hired look a likes.
that man mountain rock was the big show.
That Test was actually a former body guard for motley crew
That the mounties stun gun was real
Champs didn't wear their belts durings matches because they could be used as weapons.

Until I was 16 I believed it was real. Oh, I didn't buy into the gimmicks and angles and fueds, but I thought pro wrestling was a legit sporting competition, an actual combat sport. Damn, I wish I could go back to that.
hmmm...for a while I thought Beefcake was Hogan's brother, and his real name was Jerry Bollea. I believe I got that from one of my aunt's wrestling mags from the 80's. I need to ask her if she still has those.
