I just watched the HBK/Bulldog match from King of the Ring 1996, and I really was wondering whether or not Davey Boy could have worked as the WWF Champion. I remember when I watched the show live as a kid, I legitamitely thought that the Bulldog was going to walk out of there the champion. They had given him numerous title shots over 1995-1996, and he had fallen short each time.
As his Camp Cornette heel moment, I definitely think that the Bulldog could have been a credible champion. It would have been a nice change of pase from the Diesel, HBK, Bret Hart reigns.

I'm a huge Bulldog fan. But I don't think he could have been champion. I don't normally mention the "he can't draw good money" thing, but the Bulldog was not over enough in the US to be a successful champ. If they had an extended tour of Europe planned then maybe it could have worked, but in the US he was always a solid midcarder with the occasional main event appearance and I think that suited him fine.

Reading Bret's book, it made it seem that he was always in some type of trouble and I believe the WWE might have been afraid to put the title on him.

his biggest chance was around 92', especially with the hype of summerslam that year
as for 95/96, there was no chance he was getting the belt with the kilq in full force, though he should have got some sort of reign
in 99... no chance in hell, when you had names like big show, mankind, austin, rock, hhh, etc
plus, he wore those gay jeans in 99

He could have easily done it during an overseas show as a major face and than comeback to the States as the major heel and drop it the next night.
I could have seen that happening.

like has been said, maybe on an extended overseas tour.
I would have said maybe during the era you presented (KOTR '96) but not likely....they had other bigger stars.

I would have liked to have seen them run with Bulldog instead of Diesel in 95. Defeating HBK at Wrestlemania XI and having a stellar feud with Bret throughout the rest of the year.

He could have been, but I think he's similar to Owen and Mr. Perfect, who just worked better as the high midcard and seen as a serious contender, but never quite wins the belt.

I think he could have done it. If Diesel could be champion, anyone could be.

Of course Bulldog should have gotten the belt. Not saying he would be a long term champ but they had the exact way to put it on him with the HBK feud. He could have won it in the bizarre Beware of Dog match (which doesn't hurt Michaels) and then if it wasn't working at all he could job it back at KOTR in the same match they had anyway.
The sad aspect is that Bulldog was on his biggest career roll in 1992 when he got fired during the steroid scandal.

Bulldog could have been another Bob Backlund. By which I mean, he beats Shawn (controversially) in '96, only to transition the belt to Sid a week or so later. The timing wouldn't have worked well, though, because a Bulldog title run in '96 would have seriously screwed with the push they had laid out for Vader.
The only other time I think he could have credibly won the belt would have been late '97 after Bret dropped the belt and left for WCW. Bulldog was crazy over in Montreal and would have been a natural challenger to Michaels at the December PPV.
But then, of course, other things happened.

i do believe that Bulldog was at his beak in 1995/1996 and would have made a good champion. He couldn't be good as Shawn but better than Diesel.
