I was just watching WrestleMania XII's Iron Man Match and thinking about how much effort the WWF put into building that match up. There were so many promos and vignettes put into it, and then of course Shawn's awesome entrance and the reading of the rules before the match. This really contributed to the "big match" atmosphere.
The Survivor Series match in 1997 went the same way: the angle was perfectly plotted out and the final confrontation was something people were dying to see. This was all because of the effort put into making it count.
I'd say the same thing goes for a handful of other matches, like Sting versus Hogan at Starrcade which was so glorious because it had been built on so well and nothing was rushed.
When was the last time WWE did anything like this approach to angles/matches?
And why the hell don't they do it more often? Making a big match every two or three years would be awesome.

Id say Batista vs. Triple H at WrestleMania 21 is what comes to mind for me.
They planted the seeds of Batista turning on Evolution in October or November of 2004 and it just kept progressing up until he finally gave Trips and Flair the thumbs down.
Their series of matches after that were pretty good.

i'd say that Matt and MVP have had an excellent build-up. Even with the injury it will only add to it because they never truely faced eachother.

As long as when Matt comes back they continue it as they have been doing it will be great... as long as one doesnt get fed to the other it should be a great feud... im just afraid that Matt will be fed to MVP and be shot down the ladder again while MVP soars just because of his injury

I also like the HHH-Jeff build-up currently... they were partners and have respect for eachother but would still kick the crap out of the other for a title shot... its not perfect, but there are so many ways they could go with this its awesome. Jeff turning Heel, HHH turning heel, Jeff finally getting Main Evented, Orton vs HHH (again but meh they had good matches before) there are a lot of good possibilities to come from this... i hope they dont smurf it up

It took Mickie James and Trish Stratus six months to have their match (I know they faced at NYR, but the payoff was the Mania match), which meant the crowd were way into it by the time they actually faced off.
Still, a short, exciting build-up can be better than a long, boring one sometimes. Everyone was crazy for Lesnar-Guerrero and that was built in literally a fortnight. Compare that to, e.g., the Highlanders' quest for a title shot at the moment which nobody cares about.

The best built feud/match since the Ironman is easily Michaels/Angle in my mind.

I was going to say Mickie/Trish, that buildup was so good, WWE.com named it in their Top 10 Mania Buildups.
