I always thought of the Pedigree as a devastating move. It was a double underhook facebuster, that was sometimes delivered as a DDT, and I always thought, damn, that's three right there,.
However...
Recently, I've noticed that the move seems to have changed. Trips has been pushing people away mid-move, so it ends up looking more like at worst a belly-flop, and at best, a flap-jack from two feet in the air.
What's weird is that I think he always did this occasionally, and I just took it as a poor sell of the move. But since I haven't seen a good one in a while, I'm thinking this is just the new way of doing it.

I think it depends on who's taking the move.
Most moves look good or bad, based on the ability of the victim. That or maybe Triple H is trying to protect his legs as well

Safe Style
The most devastating pedigree was probably the botched one on Marty Garner (HHH was a new guy and Garner was possibly malinformed and thought he would go for a Tiger Drive or double Underhook Suplex).
The Pedigree executed as it is today is one of safest finishers there is. Triple H land on his padded knees while the taker can absorb most with his upper body. The Angel's Wings (Christopher Daniels' version of the move) look a bit better since there is more elevation, velocity and movement involved, but I think the Pedigree as it is executed today is fine and fits perfectly with WWE's safe style. No need to endanger your workers by dropping them on their necks just for an effect of devastation that HHH does not need.
The move as it is today is like Undertaker's tombstone a very safe variation of a dangerous move, while both moves are still over as hell. This is WWE, not Japan.

It's a pity in a way that Regal didn't take the Pedigree then, as he always takes it in a real brutal looking way. Last time I saw him get Pedigreed, HHH released his arms but Regal faceplanted, and I just thought "Oh lord, not another Marty Garner". It was seriously sick looking, yet Regal was totally uninjured. Kane and RVD often took the Pedgiree pretty good too IMO. I think it comes down to a mixture of how HHH performs it (keeps hold/lets go), and how the victim sells it.

I remember Regal taking the pedigree last year on Raw and nearly injuring his neck from it. I think it was a tag match, Regal/Finlay vs. DX if I recall correctly.

Yeah, I know what you're talking about. I think he does it that way to protect his knees. If he keeps both arms hooked that means all of his weight slams onto his knees. But if he unhooks an arm or both he can put some of his weight on his opponent's back instead of taking all the shock directly to the knees.
Same reason the Undertaker does the Tombstone once in a great while, becuase it hurts too much.

Trying not to reinjure his quad? I'm surprised he still does the move, that he didn't try to think up something new, not involving a finisher requiring such stress on his legs.

It just looks so silly when he falls away giving the little push on the back.
It's not how I like to think of the move.

He could just be protecting his balls, guys. That's the first thing I thought when I saw the move. "Ow, that's gotta feel like getting kicked in the jimmy."

How would it hurt your balls?

How would it hurt your balls? Guy's head slamming into the amt, your nads above his head. There's gonna be some contact...a minor shockwave at the least.

How would it hurt your balls? When he drops to his knees and the opponent' s head hits the mat, the head against the crotch... ouch. But if it was that, I think he would have changed it long ago.

See now, I always wondered why that Pedigree countermeasure was never really taken. I suppose it'd be hard to rig and make convincing but it just seems so practical.
