You know this isn't about the WWF-WWWE Title, you!" Yeah, where have you been? He's a Mantard. Here: youtube.com/watch?v=_umj_2xjtt8at 1:50, he says things that can't have ever been actual thoughts.

Well obviously it is his job in real life to be entertaining, but I can kinda see what he was saying. Speaking in character, his (kayfabe) job is to hold onto his title. But yeah, the promo was pretty awkward and not well done.
I think it was a bad idea in the first place for how entertaining he was to be brought up in kayfabe promos. In my opinion Y2J should have wanted to save us from him being Orton's a cold sadistic guy, or he could have said he was only champion because the deck was stacked in his favor at No Mercy since Vince put Hunter in a match with Umaga. Keep it related to storyline stuff. I don't see how it's a good idea to talk about how boring your champion is, especially if you are planning on him retaining the title.

Pretty dumb quote on Orton's part, but even dumber scripting to put him in the position to have to say something that stupid.

"Therefore, it will be La Resistance...vs. William Regal...and Eugene...for the World. Heavyweight. Championship!"
Just thought I'd share that. Fun times.

I don't see how it's a good idea to talk about how boring your champion is, especially if you are planning on him retaining the title. Very true... Even if it's a kayfabed remark, bringing up the Champion's dullness is a bad choice. Some fans could actually realize it's not just Orton's persona, but Orton himself who's quite yawny. But it's nothing new... Remember Triple H pointing out Cena's lack of wrestling skills and Cena himself admitting he was kinda right? So, if "exposing" a heel champion could be considered just another way to give him heat (a stupid way...), having your Top Face basically admit he's a mediocre wrestler is just suicidal booking.

But it's nothing new... Remember Triple H pointing out Cena's lack of wrestling skills and Cena himself admitting he was kinda right? But atleast they treated that in a sense where it was Cena isn't the greatest technical wrestler, he's a fighter. They still made Cena look (kinda) strong in the sense where he's a never say die sorta fighter.

Put emphasis on the stong points, play down (or totally deny) the weaknesses.

His promo from Armageddon. "It is not the WWE champ's job to be entertaining." RANDY: DO YOU EVEN THINK WHEN YOU SPEAK!? He just tries to remember what he was told to read. If he stayed up late the previous night playing "Assassin's Creed" though, he probably plays it by ear and then....well....

But different fans have different definitions on what "great" is. Of course HHH's character is going to attack others on their ability to put on a technical exhibition, because that's what HHH believes he's good at (whether anyone else thinks he is or not is beside the point), and yeah, Cena has never been known to put on mat clinics. Would it be better to have the face in the feud come off as delusional and claim that he can out mat-wrestle Bryan Danielson? (and yes, I know that Cena has already beat him in a televised match.)

You know what, I actually like Orton. Only because he does a good job of getting himself over as the guy you're supposed to HATE. In kayfabe terms I really do hate the guy. And it's funny, my wife who knows a little about wrestling, everytime she see him, she says how much she hates him. I tell her, "baby that's a good thing, you're supposed to hate him". At least he's got that going for him.

I loved that moment on RAW where he stared blankly offscreen...for about two seconds longer than a dramatic pause should dictate.

But it isn't his job to be entertaining. Surely if you're the champ then all you want to do is keep the belt. In kayfabe terms that is.
