They basically both would have to be Megastars for it to work. For example Hollywood Hogan vs Invasion Austin or Four Horseman Flair vs Cooperate Rock.
However something like Edge vs Kennedy would bomb.

Yes. Completely evil, psychotic, woman beating monster heel versus conniving, backed by a stable, cheat-to-win heel.
Both would be coming off big wins.

I don't see it working at all. Babyface vs. Babyface is special at Wrestlemania because you got two fan favourites and it forces fans to pick a side and also gives the possibility of a huge heel turn, but two people who the fans hate...don't see that working at all.
However, I'm not against the idea - heel vs. heel always intrigues me - just not at a Wrestlemania.

The closest we've ever come was Cena/Triple H at Wrestlemania 22. Didn't seem like fans wanted either guy to win.

I just pictured Michaels and Trips in the center of the ring on Raw one week, where they walk apart, and when they come back together, Trips is about to nail HBK with the sledgehammer, and HBK is poised to strike H with the superkick simultaneously. They both just stare shocked at the other as the show ends. An actual interesting and original idea. Musn't use it!

unless one guy turned during the match, or one guy playing the hometown hero, but still technically being a face, like bret towards the end of his wwe run, i don't see it.

Heel v Heel is in theory a match that would get both wrestlers booed (possibly out of the building), so I can't see happening.
The crowd will pick a side anyway.

Exactly what Godhand said.
It wouldnt have been the main event, but I would have liked to see Edge vs Orton last year. The crowd definatly would have chose Orton to cheer for though, because Edge was such a scum bag leading up to mania

How bout a Mania with all heels? I said it first.
And to answer the initial question, i'd say it would happen when an indie company names an event Mania. Not Wrestlemania, just Mania.

it would hgave to be like a Austin vs. Hart at Wrestlemania 13.....where one guy goes in s a tweener and the other goes in as a heel....the problem with having two heels go intop the maion event is somewhere at somepoint one of the two is goin to have to do somethin to get cheered.....

If they both had good workrate, they would cause ratings and buyrates to skyrocket.

Heel Rock vs. Heel Hogan?

No. Edge and Orton have wrestled during that whole Rated RKO split and it caused a dead crowd. Now add a title to that...and now WrestleMania...You have a dead crowd during a World Title match at WrestleMania.
Not good.
