No joke, he said that, and it got the angle of Jazz/Simon over.

The Crucifixion angle is too polarizing to induct. It may have pissed people off but no one can deny that it was innovative.
It really is hard to think of ECW crap. Even their bad angles weren't THAT bad. Besides, it's kind of cool that out of the Big Three, the smallest promotion had the least crap.

ECW (I'm talking Extreme Championship Wrestling, not Eastern Championship Wrestling) really, for me, only got crappy at the end when they got that TV deal on TNN.
Everything had to be toned down, and it really lost most of it's identity.

JT Smith starts blowing spots like Sabu and Jeff Hardy after a half pound of meth, and the crowd LOVES him for it. Billvis Wesley was mentioned. Thing was, he, Marquez, the Pordigette, and the Musketeer never did, well, anything. They got their asses kicked and did so convincingly. The 27 person Dudley stable? C'mon. Here's the list, just because. Dudley Dudley Big Dick Dudley Spike Buh Buh D-Von Chubby Dudley Studley Dudley Little Snot Dudley (not Spike) and F***ing Sign Guy Dudley? Hell, they had the Bushwackers as Dudleys for a night, for God's sake, and IT GOT OVER SOMEHOW. Hell, the BWO SHOULD have been, but even it got over big time. I think what it boiled down to was, no matter how idiotic a gimmick was (and there were MANY), if you worked hard, the loyalists would take to you (not necessarily overnight). ECW, to me anyway, was more about effort than gimmick. Prove you want it, we'll love you. Half-ass it, and we make your life hell. At least, that's my take. |

Sorry, but if "Roadkill" wasn't the epitome of WrestleCrap, I don't know what could be. Some have a soft spot for Roadkill's character, but there's absolutely nothing funny or entertaining about a fat guy with dumb sideburns screaming "CHICKENS!!!"
ECW escapes WrestleCrap because the fanbase was semi-brainwashed into thinking that everything in ECW was automatically awesome. Amish Roadkill was a terrible gimmick for their "innovative" product. That crap was straight out of 1986 WWF. Heyman's a genius, but he had some gimmicks that were terrible...but you could buy into it because the product was solid.

Also...if a 2007 guy like Robert Roode came out to rave music and shaking a cheap styrofoam head, and talking crazy to it backstage, people would crap on the gimmick to the point that some angry smark may burn Universal Studios to the ground.
Sorry...but Al Snow's "Head" was Wrestlecrap. I don't care if Mick Foley inspired it, don't care if Al Snow sold the hell out of it, don't care if Heyman booked it..."head" was WrestleCrap. Al Snow salvaged the gimmick, but he couldn't cut a promo without losing his train of thought and heat.
ECW fans ate EVERYTHING up during that time period, but I thought that gimmick was brutal back then and I was only a measly 16-year old that wanted to like anything in wrestling.

Because ECW made it work. ECW was full of stupid stuff. The entire Dudleys gimmick was pure Wrestlecrap. The fans knew it, they knew that those guys weren't family and that was the whole point. ECW was a joke that everyone was in on, that was the strong point of ECW. That is why someone like Hat Guy actually got over as a fan, because the fans were part of ECW. Everyone was in on the joke and that is why ECW doesn't have that many Wrestlecrap. Even Simon's Dick wasn't Wrestlecrap because it was just easy and simple humour not to be taken to seriously and it involded the crowd, it led to them chanting 'You suck Dick'.
True Wrestlecrap is when a completely stupid angle is taken seriously and it hurts the wrestler and completely fails what it tries to achieve. If you look at the early days of Wrestlecrap, it started with The Shockmaster. And the face of Wrestlecrap is The Gobbeldy Gooker. Two gimmicks that got a lot of build up and completely failed.

I don't know, I LOVED the hell out of Al Snow. And this was when my name was Mark McMarky. I loved the entire deal with him coming out and being crazy and all of that.
Yeah, it wouldn't work today, just like a gimmick of telling people to say their prayers, take their vitamens, et all wouldn't work today. It was what it was for the time and the people that ECW appealed to.

Also can I point out that there is a hugely popular for close to 20 years now gimmick of an UNDEAD WRESTLER that drew mystic power from an URN. And that is exactely why RD will never induct UT. The gimmick is essentialy pure Wrestlecrap, but it works and it has given Mark Calloway legendary status. Other gimmicks of Calloway however have been featured on this site (don't remember if it was inducted or if it was Weird world of wrestling), stuff like The Punisher for example. Same with Glen Jacobs. Kane is actually a more stupid gimmick then The Undertaker, but Kane will never get inducted, but Isaac Yankem DDS has and Fake Diesel too. Both were stupid and failed miserably. While Isaac was just an evil dentist and Kane is UT's little brother who was supposed to be dead after a fire, raised by Paul Bearer, turned out to be the son of Paul Bearer, was unable to talk, was able to talk, wasn't scarred at all, tortured people's testicles, went from heel to face tons of times, raped Lita, married Lita and got angry when Snitsky caused a miscarriage on the child Kane made by raping Lita. And so on and so on. Kane has been in so much Wrestlecrap, but Glen Jacobs made the gimmick work, so even though certain angles get inducted, the gimmick itself never will. And ECW is the same. Wrestlecrap in it's essence, but done perfectly with a tongue in the cheek and never insulting the fan's intelligence. |
