The History Of Glory By Honor
Saturday, October 27, 2007
"Glory By Honor" was born out of a wrestling war. As we prepare for the sixth edition this weekend, it has become ROH's longest running tradition.
The roots of the "Glory By Honor" supercard concept go back to ROH's infancy in 2002. Philadelphia was the location of a vicious wrestling war with ROH, CZW, 3PW and XPW leading the fight. Circumstances led ROH to run events in Philly on 9/21/02 and 10/5/02. The now defunct XPW promotion decided to aggressively run head-to-head against ROH on 10/5/02. This put ROH at a disadvantage, since the promotion was running Philly just two weeks earlier.
ROH countered by declaring that October 5th would be the premier edition of an annual supercard. The fans were asked to come up with possible names. They then voted on "Glory By Honor" and the event was officially born. The first "Glory By Honor" was a huge success highlighted by Samoa Joe's famous ROH debut in the hard-hitting first Fight Without Honor against Low Ki. The tradition was born.
It continued one year later on 9/20/03 for "Glory By Honor II" featuring the only ROH appearance by Terry Funk as he took on the emerging star CM Punk in their only match together. The main event saw Samoa Joe defend the ROH World Title against Christopher Daniels in a bout that saw Joe's title reign turn the corner from good to great.
"Glory By Honor III" at the historic RexPlex saw the ROH debut of Mick Foley. This was the beginning of a great relationship between ROH and Foley that led to a lot of publicity and exposure for the growing ROH product. A strong lineup from top to bottom made this one of ROH's most well rounded shows of the year and a recommended starting point for new fans looking for their first taste of ROH.
History was made at "Glory By Honor IV" when Bryan Danielson defeated James Gibson to win the ROH World Title in an absolute classic. This was the beginning of Danielson's 15 months of World Title dominance. Other highlights included AJ Styles and Mick Foley joining forces for the only time ever as Styles settled his issue against Jimmy Rave and Jay Lethal finally getting revenge on Low Ki.
Last year saw "Glory By Honor V" grow to such a big event that it had to take place over two nights. However, one of the cards came within hours of being canceled. Due to a building problem, "Glory By Honor V: Night 1" had to be moved into a tent. The weather didn't cooperate as it rained creating the infamous tent show. The unique atmosphere didn't slow down the action as KENTA brought Naomichi Marufuji to his side to settle his feud against The Briscoes in the only time these duos have collided. Samoa Joe vs. Roderick Strong was the show stealer.
"Glory By Honor V: Night 2" will go down as a legendary night in ROH history. ROH made its debut in the sold out Manhattan Center for what can be considered the defining match of Danielson's World Title reign as he put the belt up against KENTA in a leading match of the year candidate. Naomichi Marufuji defended the GHC Heavyweight Title for the first time in the United States in a classic against Nigel McGuinness and great action from top to bottom made this one of the most memorable events in ROH history. This card won Best Major Wrestling Show in The Wrestling Observer year end poll.
Now this weekend ROH will look to keep the tradition going with "Glory By Honor VI" weekend this Friday in Philadelphia and this Saturday in Manhattan. Once again the "Glory By Honor" name proves to be a draw as ROH is expecting two of its largest crowds of the year. The big attraction is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see the legendary Mitsuharu Misawa in Budokan Hall level main events on each night. You better believe the ROH crew will be in top form on both nights. These are the nights to make a lasting impact.
Big stars, huge matches and legendary nights have built the "Glory By Honor" name. Many say this will be the most important weekend of the year with packed houses, extensive media coverage and high stakes. These are the kind of shows where legacies are made. The tradition will continue this weekend in Philadelphia and Manhattan.
