Was WCW the first and only wrestling promotion to feature "___ on a pole" matches?

WCW just took the idea, turned it up to 11, yanked the knob off, and then put the knob on a pole and had Van Hammer and The KISS Demon wrestle for it.

Was WCW the first and only wrestling promotion to feature "___ on a pole" matches? Lesnar vs Taker: "Biker Chain on a Pole Match".

The thing I really hate about these matches is the fact you win by pinning your opponent. Youv don't need to use the weapon on the pole at all.
It's almost as dumb as having a cage match where the referee opens the door for you... oh wait.

I remember way back in the day, Big Boss Man and the Mountie had a nighstick on a pole match. They've been around much longer than WCW.

The only one I ever saw that made a lick of sense was the "Pink Slip on a Pole" match between Mankind and the Rock several years ago. I'm not saying it was a good match, just that it's the only one I saw that actually made sense.

Wow, honestly, I've never seen a '___ on a pole match' outside of WCW. Thanks for the responses, guys.
But has ECW ever stooped to a '___ on a pole match'? How about TNA?

TNA had that stupid on a pole match for some cage match with Abyss where like you got to keep which weapons you got down from the pole. There was a straightjacket, boltcutters and other random things.

The worst On A Pole match was Booker T. vs. Jeff Jarrett in the Mystery Object on a Pole match. There were 4 poles with baskets on top. Each basket had a different object that could be used during the match. Smurfing gay.
I loathe On A Pole matches. Unless they involve Sid Vicious impaling jobbers onto them.

Didn't one of them have a picture of Scott Hall just for s***s and giggles?

I thought that was a pretty good idea, but the problem comes when you have to wonder: is the other guy allowed to use the chair if he wasn't the one who got it down? Same problem in every pole match.
