This whole thing has always made me interested. How the hell was this able to happen in North Korea? I know Rikdozan is considered a great man from North Korea and Inoki is one of his students.
But i'm wondering how this whole thing happened. I also know how Inoki went to Moscow, Iraq, and Peking China to talk with their leaders about peace and diplomacy.
I don't get how this was able to happen.

I CAN understand how NJPW could tour there. I CAN'T understand how a subsidiary of a company owned by Turner could deal with North Korea.

The WCW wrestlers (and Eric Bischoff) toured with New Japan and booked flights, etc... from there. So in short, Time Warner didn't know.

Flair talks about this in his book. A few highlights:
"Eric told me that George Foreman had been approached first, but wanted too much money. Same thing with Hogan. I later discovered that Sting had been asked to attend, but declined. In reality, I was Eric's 4th choice. Jimmy Carter, Ted Turner, and Jane Fonda were supposedly on the list of attendees, but backed out. So the two biggest names at the festival were Muhammad Ali and Ric Flair."
"The second we arrived in Pyongyang, our passports were confiscated. Then each of us was assigned a "cultural attache'" to follow us everywhere; these guys even sat in the dressing room while we went over our matches. In the dining room where the wrestlers ate, there was a camera in every corner, monitoring every movement. When Scott Norton called his wife and said "This place sucks", his phone line suddenly went dead"
"He and the other bureaucrats were only figuring out right then that it was all predetermined. I don't know what line of shit Inoki had given them, but the North Koreans obviously thought that they had the Olympics coming"
"Because of the ravages of Parkinson's Disease, it was difficult to understand Muhammad Ali when he spoke. But at one function, we were sitting at a big, round table with a group of North Korean luminaries when one of the guys started rambling on about the moral superiority of North Korea, and how they could take out the United States or Japan any time they wanted. Suddenly Ali piped up, clear as a bell, 'No wonder we hate these motherf***ers' "

Wow that must have been some scary crap for the wrestlers. Especially Norton calling his wife and the phone just going dead.
Just wow.

Wow that must have been some scary crap for the wrestlers. Especially Norton calling his wife and the phone just going dead. Just wow. In Bischoff's book the account of the Norton incident is a bit different and even scarier sounding. In Bisch's book he says that Norton called his wife and talked with her for a lengthy time during which bitched and moaned about every single aspect of North Korea. After that he left the room for some reason (to tour with other wreslters, wrestle at the event etc) when he got back his room was turn upside down. Beds were ripped open, clothes scattered all over the room, ect. Guess it was a good thing Norton left when he did!
