From the Chikara blog on http://www.chikarapro.com:
11/9/2007: "Aloha CHIKARA faithful! Your favorite senior official Bryce Remsburg here, live from CHIKARA HQ with my maiden voyage into the world of blogging. So, I'm sitting in my luxurious office (broom closet) here doing very important things (rewatching season 3 of The Office - because it's that good), when Director O' Fun Leonard F. Chikarason knocks on my door (storms in, knocking over a mop in the process). He tells me he has an important task he needs me to complete. I assume this means Mr. Saget's coffee mug is empty again (he likes cream, but no sugar), so I head towards the CHIKCommissary. Oh no, he informs me, with the most minty fresh of breaths (Psych! Halitosis alert!) He wants me to rank the Top 5 Rookies of the Year in our beloved CHIKARA. I readily obliged, fearing the wrath of what lies in his beard, and really, who doesn't like lists? I have been privileged to have an excellent seat for CHIKARA shows over the past 5 1/2 years, be it from inside the ring or from the commentary suite...so I know I am up to the task.
"2007 was a memorable year for CHIKARA. Our sixth season saw us break our own attendance record multiple times, it saw us release our first national DVD, it may have seen the Kings of Wrestling implode, but the one thing I will remember is the jaw-dropping performances of our rookie class of students. Never before have newcomers turned so many heads so fast, and made everyone believe they can hang with the big dogs. They even impressively upended the upperclassmen 5-2 at "New Star Navigation". This list lies solely on my opinion, so please enjoy!
"Before I begin, I would be remiss if I didn't give honorable mention to a few that might not necessarily be rookies, but definitely earned their CHIKARA stripes by stepping up to the plate big time this year, and cementing themselves steady appearances in 2008. Very quickly, in no particular order:
"Shayne Hawke - While he may be the walking, breathing Webster's definition of "red-headed stepchild", his performance between the ropes is nothing to belittle. Mitch Ryder and the Kings of Wrestling took an almost immediate interest in him, so he must be doing something right.
"Billy Roc - The nicest man in the state of Indiana had a very impressive Young Lions Cup weekend, and his chain wrestling skills make smiles contagious.
"Brodie Lee - After a road trip gone wrong, the tassel sporting "Right Stuff" returned to eastern Pennsylvania as the Wrangler-wearing "Big Rig". Tecnicos far and wide have nightmares about his size 15 right boot.
"The Olsen Twins - Many of our fans like to laugh at the antics of Colin and Jimmy, but as the year progressed the chuckles turned to gasps of amazement. The "feel-good tag team of the decade" took Cheech & Cloudy to their absolute limit twice, and as the year closed we saw allusions to frustration, and a more serious side. If this continues, our Campeones de Parejas Incoherence could have two focused San Franciscans biting at their coattails. Or to Incoherence, their bababhehgfhas.
"The Colony - Ever since becoming a trio, our resident ants have been out to prove themselves. They never backed down from a fight, and racked up impressive wins over different permutations of BLK Out. 2008 will see them continue to make mountains out of anthills. That is how that expression goes, right?
"And now, without further ado, I give the you the first annual CHIKARA Thomas Ian Nicholas Rookie of The Year Honors (patent pending). In a particular order:
"5) Moscow, The Communist Bovine - The creation of our first ever Create-A-Wrestler contest emerged at Young Lions Cup V in a large headed, spotted, dancing way. Not to mention, he boasts the most catchy self-referential theme song in all the land. He has made memorable appearances in multiple man/species tags that would make Gorbachev's liver spot proud. (Author's note: I am proud to announce I spelled Gorbachev right without having to look it up.) With momentum, he could prove to be a real moo-ver and a shaker in 2008. Come on, quit rolling your eyes, you know you want to laugh.
"4) Helios - In his first and only CHIKARA appearance thus far, he snagged the Young Lions Cup from Chuck Taylor in swift fashion. This makes him the 8th man to hold the prized Cup, and only the third to win it in non-tournament fashion, but the first to win it in his debut. We also know his "Sky is Falling" double knee attack coupled with a beautiful running Shooting Star Press spelled doom for Sexy Chuckie T, and resulted in playgrounds full of children rejoicing everywhere. After all, it was Taylor that won the August match which stipulated that we would never see the face of a certain wrestler ever again. Now the masked Helios is making waves, and our extraordinary rookie class won't make the road to Young Lions Cup VI an easy one for Helios.
"3) Ophidian & Amasis, The Osirian Portal - Team ShaneSaw was having quite the year. They won the 2007 King of Trios along with Mike Quackenbush in February, and challenged F.I.S.T. for the Campeones de Parejas in March. Then they acquired two points, and tried to turn up their game to get that all-important third point at "Cibernetico & Robin" in September. Unfortunately, their opponents that night were the Osirian Portal. Making huge waves in their tag team debut, Ophidian & Amasis came to Philadelphia and defeated ShaneSaw, costing them their third point (and ultimately their partnership.) After one of the biggest debuts in CHIKARA history, they almost sent Cheech & Cloudy and Incoherence up the Nile with their teamwork and athleticism. Watching them perform, it's easy to forget they have only a handful of matches underneath their belts. Amasis' rug-cutting aerial prowess combined with Ophidian's "death grip" submission leave them as anything but underdogs.
"2) Lince Dorado - This Puerto Rican/Mexican export always wore his proud heritage on his sleeve (literally.) Little did he know 2007 would find him defending it against the wily Mitch Ryder. The Golden Lynx of CHIKARA found himself firmly under the paw of lucha libre legend El Pantera as King of Trios dawned, and continued as his partner as the year went on, learning more from the ring apron than one could in any training facility. He rapidly rose to main event status, defeating CHIKARA cornerstone Chris Hero in the middle of the ring with the CHIKARA Special in Wallingford, CT, and taking Mike Quackenbush to a no-contest in a well-deserved challenge for the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship in October. Lince became the captain of his Cibernetico squad with under a year pro, leading the luchador tecnicos into battle with the Kings of Wrestling. After lasting over 45 minutes, the numbers overwhelmed him, but not before a memorable showing. He also holds two victories over Ryder, a man who has been wrestling almost as long as Dorado has been alive. In his biggest match yet, his very identity will be contested, as he puts his mask and the honor of lucha libre on the line against Ryder November 18 in Philadelphia. He has left audiences breathless as he floats through the air with ease, and at this pace, Lince will have all of his nine lives intact for a long time.
"1) Tim Donst - Baseball. Hamburgers. Apple Pie. America. Tim Donst. Young Tim's ascension into the hearts of the CHIKArmy came not with victories and showmanship, but with an incredible amount of heart and determination. He sticks out physically in CHIKARA land, being the only rookie on this list without a mask. His ring gear is similarly plain, sporting an amateur wrestling singlet, headgear, and shoes, but there is nothing plain about his performances. Donst, who was barely a teenager when CHIKARA opened its doors in 2002, spent over 2 years training at the Wrestle Factory, and debuted in April without much fanfare. He started turning heads on July 21 in Wallingford, CT. No one in the building that night will soon forget the all-out gutsy efforts Donst exerted in defeat to Eddie Kingston, a man 5 years his senior in experience. King is one of the hardest hitters in all of the land, and held nothing back, making Donst his personal punching bag. But Timmy didn't give up. His tenacity shone through, and a star was made. He held his own in the October rematch, coming within nanoseconds of unseating the "Last of A Dying Breed". He also went hold for hold with his teacher, Mike Quackenbush in September, and upset Icarus with the use of the handy CHIKARA Special at "New Star Navigation". The 19-year old student of the game has the world at his fingertips, and a tremendous upside. He has an uncanny knack to take punishment and win fans, even in losing efforts. With approximately a dozen matches under his belt, the sky's the limit, and 2008 should be telling, given he can dodge the sophomore jinx.
"As always, thanks for reading, and thanks for supporting CHIKARA. Please electronically befriend me, or send along feedback to my very own MySpace page. All hail the future of friendship! Look forward to seeing you for our season finale blowout in Reading, Hellertown, and Philadelphia!
Adios!"
