I love masks. I honestly wish there were more masked wrestlers out there. It's one of the huge reasons I love Chikara.

It depends on the gimmick or situation, but I think I like paint more than masks.

Usually masks. You can't bet your face paint in a match.

Face paint look at guys like Demolition, The road Warriors, Umaga, Kamala, and The Ultimate Warrior they just looked so cool and gave them so much personality. Masks are good as well but with a few exception (Kane, Abyss, Mankind, Chikara wrestlers) the mask dosen't really add much character.

If I remember correctly there was an old Chris Jericho promo from his WCW days that fits this topic in a way. Jericho was either cuting a promo on a luchador named Halloween(I think I got the name right)or just picking on him because he could and it was expected of him. Halloween wore face paint instead of the usual mask. Jericho,s comment was something like
" I Know all these guys from mexico are poor, but this guys must be really bad off. He cant even afford a mask, so he just paints his face up"
You can't bet your face paint in a match.
who says you can not have a match where your face paint is put up like a match where your mask is up for grabs. It would work by the same logic, If you lost the match you would have to wipe off the paint in public and wrestle without face paint from that point on.
I went with mask myself because it is a more traditional thing and you could do more with it story wise. Beyond losing the mask you can always do the old try to figgure out who the guy is when its completely obbious, Dusty Rhodes as the Midnight Rider or Hogan as Mr. America for example. When Dusty Rhodes was "suspended "and wrestling as the Midnight Rider they did that angle for weeks. Finaly they got a fat jobber who looked similar to Dusty, had him put the mask on and him and Magnum TA jumped the 4 horsemen( I forget which of the Horsemen were directly involved). I can not remember wether it was before or after a match, but the horsemenwere in the ring. The run in was done in such a way it in such a way that the Midnight Rider was quickly on the mat and held there while Magnum was thrown outside of the ring. Then one of the Horsemen got on the mic and announced that the Midnight Rider was Dusty Rhodes and they would prove it. The mask came off and to thier suprise Dusty was not under the mask. Then Dusty hit the ring with Magnum (the 4 Horsemen lost track of him in all the confusion) and they jumped the Horseman from behind again. Dusty was removed from the building by security of course because he was under suspension and not allowed to be in the building.
Also at some point in that Storyline The Midnight Rider won either the U.S title from Tully Blanchard or World title from Ric Flair but had to give the belt back. Then JJ Dillon dug up a old NWA rule that a masked man could not hold a "major" title without showing NWA offficials who he was under the mask. Since Dusty was "suspended" at the time it would have been impossible to do so with out be striped of the title anyway so The Midnight Rider gave back the title.
I know face paint can be faked as well, but it does not work as well in my opinion. Barry Windham as a fake sting or the use of the NWO Sting(I believe that was a wrestler named Jeff Fahee or something similar to him) are examples of faked face paint not working well in my opinion.

When I said you can't bet it, it's because you don't give the victor a physical object. Also, half the time, most of your paint comes right off, so there isn't much impact by comparison.

I was about to say almost the same thing. With someone like Sting or Warrior we say their faces all the time but when Rey Mysterio or Juvi unmasked it meant more because we didn't know what they looked like. So masks>paint.

Okay I see your point. I voted for mask anyway for the other resons I listed. I still wonder if a paint vs paint match could work on some level though(although I agree with everyone who stated that a mask means much more than face paint). It would have been a good stipulation in a match to end the sting/vampiro feud in WCW. The loser of the match would have to wipe off their face paint and could not wear any face paint or make up as long as they were in WCW. Come to think of it that would have been a good match for Vampiro and the KISS Demon back in WCW as well.

Depends on the person, I guess. Some people look better in paint than in masks, and vice versa.

It all depends on what the mask looks like or what the facepaint looks like.
I like Face paint because I was a stinger fan and loved the road warriors and demolition.
However Prosthetics is where my heart lays now
