Credit: Fight Network By Anthony Armstrong The Harris County Medical Examiner's office confirmed today that Sammy Vasquez, a 35-year-old mixed martial artist from Houston, Texas, died on Friday, Nov. 30. Vasquez's death appears to be the first documented fatality resulting from a regulated MMA fight. Vasquez (1-2) suffered a third-round knockout loss to Vince Libardi during a Renegades Extreme Fighting bout on Oct. 20 at Houston's Toyota Center. After the fight, Vasquez was taken to Saint Joseph Medical Center's Critical Care Unit, where he began a 47-day struggle. The official cause of Vasquez's death has not been released, pending a determination from the medical examiner. www.thefightnetwork.com/news_detail.php?nid=5555

Unfortunate, but at the same time, not surprising.
Frankly, I'm impressed it took this long.

Head injuries are tricky business. I'll withhold judgement until we get an autopsy.

With the Matt Hughes next to the original post, it's like he's saying "That dumb bastard". It makes me laugh.

Wait just a minute. I might just be crazy, but I seem to recall in UFC's early days (tournament era, after they were "banned" from the US adn had to have the events in Brazil or something like that) there was a fatality at one event. I could just be out of it, but I swear I remember something on the news.

I don't get how any of that can be the result of a fight. I think he just happened to get sick DURING the fight. But, yeah, here comes the huge crackdown on fighting.

I don't get how any of that can be the result of a fight. I think he just happened to get sick DURING the fight. But, yeah, here comes the huge crackdown on fighting. This is something that was talked about on an MMA radio show I listened to and I was so hoping that someone would say this. They were talking about how MMA fans are the most paranoid fans in the world. Whenever something happens (fighters behaving badly, steroids, etc) fans throw up there hands and go, "Oh no, I hope the mainstream doesn't find out about this, fighting's gonna get banned!" Well, yes this does suck hugely. No one should die in an unnatural fashion, especially in the context of doing something they love. But face it, from the sounds of things, everything was done right and handled properly. Not to sound crass about the whole deal, but the worst I see coming from this is more pre-fight screenings for the participants.

Not surprised. In order to win a fight, you've generally to hit the opponent hard and repeatedly less they do the same to you. It had to happen sooner or later. There will be flak but MMA will survive. (I hear there's money in it) My condolences to the family and friends of the felled fighter.

Yeah, this is sad news, but there is a danger in these fights that the fighters are aware of. It's like bull riding or boxing or whatever. There's a chance of death involved.

Not to be political or anything, but look for a top political name in this article. Since we live in an era of media sensationalism, this could be a political issue. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ufc#Controversy_and_reformBut it should be noted that he once used to box.
