Just picked up the Royal Rumble Anthology sets 1 and 2, and I just finished up the first rumble...just some random thoughts about the show, hoping to spark some discussion:
*The Rumble is probably my favorite show of the year, and I was waiting for so long for this set to be released...Definitely worth the wait.
*I thought that maybe I was hearing things at the beginning of the show when I heard some sort of mechanical voice in the background of the matches, and it turned out to be some Canadian woman with a megaphone. I"m assuming that someone had told her to stop becaue after the opening bout, it was gone...Thank God.
*Steamboat/Rick Rude was a fun match. It dragged on for a little bit but picked up towards the end. I really like the use of the Submission/DQ ending that was used in this match, just as long as it was done sparingly.
*I always respected Rude as an in ring competitor, but I just despised his character. I mean, with a fiery passion. I just hated how damn sleazy he looked...I guess that he did his job well.
*Dino Bravo has such a bland personality, but paired with Jesse the Body in the Weightlifting Challenge, he was really entertaining. I mean, there could have been an extra match during that segment, but McMahon arguing with Jesse all night about the ending of the lift was pretty humerous.
* Simply put, I love the Jumping Bomb Angels. I loved how McMahon just frankly came out and admitted to not knowing any of their names until the commercial break, when he basically "pretended to remember." I didn't think I would like this match as much as I did, and I really wish that they had kept the Woman's Tag Belts around longer than they did.
*Ted Dibiase really needed the World Title Belt. I think he could have had a fantastic heel run as the champ.
*The first Rumble was pretty boring, but what else was to be expected. I hated seeing Duggan win, but seriously, it didn't mean anything then.
*The main event was alright, but extremely full of botches, mostly from...surprise surprise...Paul Roma. The WWF continued to pump out tremendous Samoan Tag Teams, and the Islanders really did follow in the Samoan tradition.
*An overall good show. Thank God the Rumble Match caught on with the fans, because it really is one of the most exciting hours of the WWF each year.
