Baseball: 1994 strike - But then 1998 came around and brought a lot of fans back. Now attendance is climbing every year and baseball brought in $6 billion last year.
Hockey: 2004-2005 lockout

Jumping the shark means that the sport is done and over. Well, most of those sports are far from becoming extinct.
Anyway, the NHL is in a dark period. It's called the Bettman era.

Basketball: It started after Jordan retired (the 2nd time) and really got rolling when the Lakers dynasty crumbled.

Boxing: Lennox Lewis retires No actually Lewis is one of the reasons nobody gives a crap about the heavy weight division. Lewis was a good boxer but he was boring to a fault. Other than the heavyweights boxing is doing fine.

Football [soccer] in Italy: Match-fixing scandal and its aftermath. Except immediately following that they won the world cup and then Milan won the Chapions League It doesn't matter... World Cup 2006 was an immense fluke, and Milan won the CL thanks to their experience. And anyway, Italian football may still be ok internationally, but the level of the domestic league has declined so much in recent years, and the whole movement is messed up quite badly.

Someone said boxing is doing fine???
Floyd is doing fine, Oscar anytime he wants can do fine. That is about it though.
MMA, has been beating the pants off boxing. Boxing promoters have been spending to much time arguing about the slices of the pie to even notice there pie is smaller then it was.
