(EDIT: This thread was formerly titled Deceased individual found here near Laramie, WY, but seeing as that case has resolved, I was wondering if there were any others out there that monitor radio traffic here at WrestleCrap.)
So, like most nights, I had the police scanner on last night (I usually have it on all waking hours), and heard this all get dispatched...
911 call was recieved in Laramie, WY and at Carbon County Dispatch both. The reporting party stated that there was a subject in the barrow ditch on Highway 130 at around Mile Marker 20, and appeared to be deceased.
Centennial Valley (a rural fire/ems department) and Laramie both dispatched ambulances. Subject was reported to be in the barrow ditch not breathing, and the reporting party was advising that the subject appears to have been there for quite some time.
MS144 from here in Laramie and MS146 from Centennial both responded that the subject was DOA, and the Sheriff's Department went ahead and began to treat the area as a crime scene.
This all happened after 2 AM locally, and aside from the radio traffic that I listened to and recorded, I can't seem to find any coverage of this by state media or the local paper. I suppose, given that the investigation is ongoing and the incident was first reported after the local newsroom closed, I won't hear anything till tomorrow.
Still quite odd, seeing as in this little rural town, we don't have much in the way of major crime or major incidents for our local emergency workers.

Well, that' s definitely weird if like you said, your town isn' t used to major crimes. I hope they find the criminal quickly if it is indeed a murder...
Also, there' s something I don' t understand due to language narrier... what does DOA mean exactly ?

Just curious, but are you Spider-Man? Or an EMT. Cuz I can't think of any other reason to have a police scanner.
That being said, is it worth? I always wondered if it would be worth, tho I don't even know if they're legal in Canada

I always wondered if it would be worth, tho I don't even know if they're legal in Canada Dunno about Canada, but I know they're legal in every state, however some states have restrictions upon them being in a vehicle. Check your local laws or give your local law enforcement agency a call. My step dad and dad were both volunteer firemen, my dad worked in the prison system, and we have retired LEOs (Law Enforcement Officers) in the family. It's been pretty much drilled into me since I was in the cradle. I've no interest in being an EMT, but I've contemplated LEO work before, and if I could get into shape, fire work. Currently, I'm thinking of applying to local dispatch center to see if this sort of work is something I'm actually interested in without having to go through the training of a sworn position. As far as local crime rates go, the stats for last year will be finished for the next council meeting, I think, but violent crimes had been on a two year downturn around here (sexual assaults being the exception). Already, though, we've had more calls this year due to a transient shelter being closed (so they've no place to go and no place to even get warm when they get to town), an unusually high influx of local Tech school students, and fewer officers on the street night in and night out (the fallicy in their thinking that since crime is down they could take officers off the street). Hell, last summer there was a SEVERE vandalism to the hair joint across from the bar I was working at in the middle of the night. The owner and his wife were regulars of mine at the bar/restaurant, and thankfully he had insurance. The summer before, I listened to a double homicide/suicide go out over the scanner too, and they didn't even have the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation's number on file at dispatch(!!!!). So to say that we're probably unprepared for major incidents like this is very likely an understatement. I'm waiting for the Casper Star-Tribune (the only statewide newspaper here in Wyoming) update their webpage as people get into the newsroom around 5-6 tonight to see if they've got any coverage. Needless to say, I keep my doors and windows locked at all times. Oh, and Spiderman has NOTHING on Batman, and Batman would be better off if he'd ditch Robin and hire Harley Race as his sidekick.

Thanks for the insight dude. Much appreciated. Oh, and I agree Batman is cooler. Spider-Man is just the one I associate more closely with police scanners

I'm just sayin', if he asks you if you're a cop, you have to tell the truth. Seriously, that's horrible that somebody died, but it'd be awesome to have a police scanner.

I'm unaware of any laws that state a law enforcement officer has to divulge information of their credentials when not pertaining to an ongoing investigation. Also, I'm pretty sure that if I was a cop, I'd be restricted as to discussion of an ongoing incident in a place such as this, assuming I had any info. Since I'm a civilian, however, and their radio traffic isn't encrypted or unavailable, it's all fair game. Besides, statewide news agencies are picking up on the story now. As far as radio traffic/scanning/monitoring goes, unless you know what you're listening for (which changes from agency to agency), it's pretty mundane. Evey now and again, a reasonably large incident will happen, such as a big fire, which I monitored the whole dispatch last week, or something like this where it's a multi-agency effort, but most times it's traffic stops, traffic complaints, civil matters, and other routine police work in these parts. Lots of "Sam24, code six, intersection of Fourth and Bradley with Wyoming passenger car nine four Adam Frank Zebra" and then dispatch's return traffic. Had I not grown up around it, and didn't see the advantages of knowing what's going on as it happens due to local media being WAY slow (the one local newspaper, I mean...the nearest TV station is 150 miles away), I probably wouldn't care.

That's insane. There hasn't been anything tragic making national headlines like that in ten years.
It's sad that happened. I hope whoever did it gets what's coming to them.

Matthew Sheppard is a distant memory around here, mainly because, while it never made national news or anything, it came out that it was more likely his drug use that created the vendetta that would get him killed, not his sexuality. Hell, even the double homicide/suicide that occured a year and a half ago involving three college students (20, 20, and 21 years of age, if I recall) barely got any coverage outside of Wyoming. However, listing some of the reasons that crime has been on an upturn here (I did in the post above), I'm keeping my ears open at all times.

I have a police scanner, mostly to help coordinate SkyWarn.

Makes sense. My model is ancient, a Uniden BC80XLT. Conventional, 50 channels in 5 banks, nothing fancy or even a useful model anywhere but here. But when I've only got to coordinate freqs for Laramie PD Tac1 and Tac 2, Fire/EMS Paging, Tac 1 and Tac2, and Wyoming Highway Patrol for emergency services, and local services otherwise, 50 channels is more than enough.

my grandma has a police scanner. Not sure why. There is rarely ever a major crime in the area. I think we've had onyl a few murders in our county in the last two decades(one of them committed by a member of the immediate family, but thats another story for another time(howbout NEVER)).

KCWY out of Casper, WY reported that this was a local individual on their 10 PM (local) newscast, and that foul play wasn't suspected. Unfortunately, with the afore-mentioned lack of media, that's likely the last I'll hear about this. Good to know it's nothing nefarious.
Oh well. If anyone likes, we can turn this conversation into a general scanning/monitoring thread. If not, I presume it'll go the way of the dodo.
