It was the Rock and Show as the last two, they didn't screw anything up IIRC. It was kind of apeing HBK/Bulldog from '95. Actually, it was more of Lex/Bret from 94 than anything, at least if I remember the ending right. Oh yeah, that's more spot on. Damn, I wish my girlfriend was the cool kind that bought me wrestling DVDs. I needs me that Rumble Anthology!

The 94 Rumble...wasn't so great.

95 was saved by Dick Murdoch being in there for a long time.

95 was my first Rumble, so I enjoyed it. And I still think it has the best ending in Rumble history (arguably topped by 2007).

Yeah, as far as pure quality from bell to bell Rumble, I don't see them ever topping '92. Lame ending aside, that thing was booked to near perfection. Especially Flair/Piper.

My second favorite would probably be the 2004 Royal Rumble match which had a pretty solid roster as well.

I agree with your second pick, but dang.... I don't know if I'll ever be able to watch it again.

Sure a lot of alternative bookings for 93 Rumble and WM9 would have been "better", but WWF had their modus operandi and all the Savage v Hart wishful thinking wouldn't have happened. WWF tried the "passing the torch" thing with Warrior, who was vastly more over than Bret Hart, and the thing didn't work out. Savage was already on his downward spiral in WWF, and he was seen as potential announcer rather than as active main eventer. Bret was basically a "placeholder" champion , or a B-plan if you will, so they didn't really have a chance to set up a big WrestleMania event without re-inventing people, or calling Hogan back.
Yokozuna was the ideal monster to build up until the next Knight in Shining Armour would show up. Lex Luger was the chosen one but he failed, so it was Bret at WMX.
All in all, the whole 1993 was a year of "stand-by" and "tryouts" for WWF. they were stuck between old and new with neither working great for them, so they had to try and improvise. This is the first I ever heard of Bret being a place holder champ.

Savage was historically a bad Rumble partcipant. In 91 he didn't even show up, 92 he launced himself over the top rope to get at Jake (I don't think anyone really knows if it was planned or not, but I don't think it was. Later Bossman eliminated himself and it stood up) I don't think it was, either, because Heenan and Monsoon scrambled to come up with an explanation, and Heenan eventually decided it was because he wasn't thrown out by someone else. ...and neither was Kane, but don't tell anyone that.

This is the first I ever heard of Bret being a place holder champ. I'm a big Bret Hart mark, but looking back, I don't feel he was booked as the #1 Guy. Bret won his first WWF title against Flair on a taped house show... No PPV fanfare at all. He just showed up on Superstars/Challenge with the big belt... A bit underwhelming IMO. Then he got the "fighting champion" gimmick, very fitting, and a batch of defenses against minor players, two PPV matches against Shawn and Razor, before dropping the belt to Yoko at Mania. Just to have Hogan getting it back the same night. So: reign #1: 6 months, 2 "big" defenses. Won it off TV, lost it at Mania to a guy who lost it to Hogan 10 minutes later... Reign #2: got it at WMX (great moment) against Yoko. Great feud against Owen. Lost to Backlund (!) who dropped it to Diesel shortly after. Probably Bret's "best" reign, but still... Lex Luger was the designed winner, but WWF had to change plans. Diesel then became the chosen one (hence his 1 year long run). Reign #3: got it off Diesel, dropped it to HBK. The plan was putting Shawn over big time; Bret was the only one able to pull off an Iron Man match. He got the belt so he could hand it to Shawn. Reign #4: do we need to speak of that one? Reign #5: or about that one? So, going quickly through Bret's 5 title runs, the only one where he vaguely was the Top Guy is his second one. And even there, he was somewhat keeping the belt while the Next Guy was rising to the top.

I thought 2001 (the one with drew carey) was crap in the respect that Taz was jobbed in like 10 seconds.

I've always liked the 1990 Rumble, especially with the Hogan/Warrior confrontation. The entrance of Jake Roberts into this Rumble (with a cocky Ted DiBiase alone in the ring) is my favorite of all time.

I found '93 to be a disappointment compared to the previous year's Rumble. For me its a close call between '90, '92 and '07 for best ever. 2001 gets a honourable mention.
