was watching it last night.
First thing i noticed is the difference in the talent in the rumble from the previous year. 1992 rumble is full of wrestlers like; Flair, piper, jake the snake, bulldog, savage, hogan and ted dibiase. While a few big names in the likes of perfect the 1993 rumble doesn't have many classic stars in the match. It's also pretty boring for a rumble, the big points being the undertaker being bitched to giant gonzales and bob backland breaking the record for being in the longest (and getting huge pops for doing so).
My main point is that it comes down to savage and Yoko. Yoko is the huge monster and savage (listening to crowd reaction) is still insanely popular.
The event sets up wrestlemania 9. In vinces mind he is setting up yoko to loose to bret at wm9 (obviously hogan stops this).
Basically Vince is setting up Yoko as a monster heel who will get jobbed to Bret at his first attempt. Savage spends WM9 doing colour..... surely we could have seen an awesome Savage Vs Hart face vs face match to headline WM9. Bret goes over yet Savage remains face "passing the torch" to bret in a manor similar to hogan vs warrior.
This would allow Yoko to go on the rampage for the rest of the year building up a big showdown with Bret in which Bret could loose and then win a rematch at WM10.
Savage seems fit in the rumble, was he holding an injury which held vince back from doing this?
It may be argued that Savage had lost his drawing power after loosing to Flair, but the guy seemed still hugely popular and he'd still be a much bigger name than Yoko to main event.
Yoko could have still went to Mania and had a win.
Even if you say "hey, yoko was the better choice at the time", look at it this way. You have savage doing colour at WM9 and Hogan tagging up with Brutus Beefcake.
Surely it would have been a bigger draw to have (another) Savage Vs Hogan perhaps with a stipulation?
I think we all know WM9 was a bit of a balls up. I still love it as it holds fond memories for me as it was marks the peak of my wrestling fandom as a child.
All I'm saying is to sell a PPV, WM9 simply had Champ Vs monster and big fan favourite in a tag team match.
