Because you know and I know that we can't let metal have all of the fun here.
So- my favorite alumnus (and favorite artist ever) is Stevie Wonder. Yours?

I'm not entirely sure if any of these acts were signed to the Motown label, but here are a few of my favorites from the Motown-era...
Oooh Baby Baby - Smokey Robinson And The Miracles You Are Everything - The Stylistics The Bells - The Originals My Girl - The Temptations

I love Motown... The Temptations are probably the greatest act, but "Tracks of my Tears" is probably the greatest song... ever.... and once you really get into the Jackson 5 catalog there is some really amazing stuff... try, "I don't know why I love you"

If you like Motown at all, track down the documentary Standing in the Shadows of Motown; it's a fantastic look at the Funk Brothers, the backing band that did the actual music for just about every hit that came out of the label.

The English group The Fall tried to get a deal on Motown Records around 1983. At the time they were a rather strange art-rock group.
Somehow they got to a pitching stage and alls they could take was a copy of their latest album 'Hex Enduction Hour'.
The first few lines on the first song contains the lyric "...all you obligatory n*****s."
Imagine that. A room full of Motown suits being greeted by a racial slur in an hysterical Northern English brogue.
Slightly off-topic, but the story amuses me.

Huge fan of The Temptations, the Ruffin-era stuff and much of the Edwards stuff is just classic. Holland-Dozier-Holland were a great songwriting team.
Favorite songs would either be "Just My Imagination" or "Baby I Need Your Loving"
