I am going to be visiting New York at the end of July, beginning of August, and was wondering... what is the best thing to see up there? Where's the best place to stay? I have never been, and am basing the trip around seeing the Halos play in Yankee Stadium. I want to be there before it's torn down, and take in the history. Even though I hate the Yankees, I can respect the history, you know. I was thinking of staying there for around a week, and staying at a hotel in mid-Manhattan. I wasn't going to rent a car either, based on the traffic and all that. But what I know about NY is all based on television and what I've read on the net. What is there to do, and what else is worth seeing/doing there? I know we have a lot of NY crappers, so what do you recommend? I want to see something on Broadway, and taste some pizza. Oh, and watch the Yankees lose, of course. Thank you for your help.

Check out the museums in Manhattan, like the Natural History, the Met, etc. Get pizza in Brooklyn, if you can. Coney Island pie, nice. Failing that, just hit up Little Italy. Street cart hot dogs are your friends. Get to Broadway and see Avenue Q, The Producers, or something equally as glorious. Visit the Empire State Building. Why the hell not? If you can spare it, a concert at Lincoln Center is a great experience. New York cheesecake. Don't pass it up. For bars, Midtown Manhattan is fun because of how many people there are, but Downtown/The Village, while a lot of "poseurs" hang around there, still has some great places to hit up. Take a PATH train to Hoboken, NJ for some good places to eat/drink. Oh, and screw Yankee Stadium, come chill with me at Shea instead.

Cross Bronx Pizza in the Bronx is the BEST pizza. Check that out.
If you like bars, check out McSorley's. It's a very historic irish pub.
I love the Museum of Natural History, so that's always a good thing to do. If the weather's good enough, go to the Bronx zoo. But try to get there early, in the middle of the day the animals get lazy if it's too hot.

The Paley Center for Media
Great place to watch old tv programs and to listen to classic radio shows.

Get to Broadway and see Avenue Q, The Producers, or something equally as glorious. Avenue Q is kinda tough to get into. You have to do a lottery. But I just got back from NYC, and as far as broadway goes, some great shows are Crybaby and In the Heights. Union Square is pretty fun. Kinda pricey(especially at night), but fun.

Been there for a game between the Yankees and Rangers (where A-Rod was still with Texas)...Bernie Williams won the game for the Yanks. Great place for a baseball game....shame they are knocking it down.
Time Square is also beautiful at night and when I mean beautiful....I mean f***en great.

It's sad when history is sent to the scrap heap. Shame on New Yorkers for giving the go-ahead to this.

I didn't give the go-head for yankee stadium. If I could, I'd have fought it. But Shea? Even Met fans acknowledge that this is one of the worst stadiums in the MLB. It's hideous. Though a few of my friends have taken to calling Citi Field "the Death Star."

I agree with seeing something on Broadway. If you head to Times Square, there's a booth there where you can get cheap(er) tickets. If you can see Avenue Q, that's the one I recommend most.

Before going to the game, stop in to Yankee Tavern. It's across the street from the concourse entrance (the bleacher seats entrance), just a few steps down from the corner on E 161st St. If you get off the subway, the stadiums right in front of you on the right. Just take a left and walk to the corner. You can see the Stadium from the tavern. You'll not only get yourself affordable beers prior to the game, but the "Hot Dog Platter" is the best deal for the baseball fan. You get 2 dogs and fries for $5. Or you could just wait a half hour later when you walk into the stadium you can get 1 dog for $6, but I stand by this method.
That's our tradition. It's a cost saver and it's fun.

The New York Aquarium in Coney Island is my favorite tourist spot to visit when I go back to visit family. Then walk down the boardwalk & hit up the original Nathan's.
Aaaaahhhhhhh...memories.

Awesome, thank you everyone for the advice. So much information... As for the Mets new balllpark, I kinda care, but I don't know if I can subject myself to some Mets baseball. :\ There is history there though, so I might have to squeeze it in. Depending. I'm going to read up on Avenue Q, most definately. Any other ideas, or thoughts... I'd appreciate it

Meat, go see the Mets if they are playing the Braves. That should make you happy.
