Raven: The Best Commentator Is...

Before beginning this article, I would like to officially state something that is pretty much public knowledge anyway, and that is I am no longer with Tna. They didn’t want to renew my contract, which to be honest , I was kind of relieved of because I felt like its about time to do other stuff, yet I love the game so much, I didn’t want to walk away. They made that easy, but then they came back with a couple of offers. While they were still offering, I was still undecided. I felt their offers to be not something worthwhile to me and I wasn’t comfortable taking them. That ends the only reason I hadn’t cleared this up before. I feel I have a lot to say about my tenure there but I want to wait and give it some time and reflection before I do.
I have a few projects in the works post wrestling that I’ve been looking forward to, a few I would like to mention, a few I wouldn’t. I will still be doing indies. I will be opening a wrestling school and if you are interested, please go to my website www.theraveneffect.com and read my most recent blogs for more information. I have no idea how long I’ll want to teach. I am committing to this for the next year at least, but all I know is, I have a lot of knowledge that I feel needs to be passed on. I will be also opening an Ebay store which if you’ve ever been to my house, you’ll see why I almost am forced to do this. I will probably start by selling stuff at my website, once again the addy is, www.theraveneffect.com and then move it to an Ebay store. I have 50 plus long boxes of comics, as well as 300 statues(not even including action figures), artwork, clothing, wrestling memorabilia, etc. Anyway, enough about me, on to the column.
Commentators are as key to wrestling as any other component, and in many ways, more important than most. The crappier the product, the more valuable they are. If the promotion is on fire and all the angles are hot and the characters are over; not that a great commentator isn’t necessary but you can definitely get by with a lousy one. For example, and in no particular order of mediocre , rotten, abysmal, and putrid, we have Mike Goldberg at the Ufc. In fact Joe Rogan is so good and the product is so hot, that he is able to get by, by basically just aping whatever Rogan says. Goldberg is famous for such bon mots as “right Joe?” How he became so valuable is a testament to Rogan, and if you ask me,he owes Rogan a new house. Rogan is so amazingly good that he has actually convinced me to buy PPv’s that I truly had no interest in seeing for free, let alone paying for. If you want to learn how to cut money drawing promos, watch Rogan on the preview shows. He is so excited to see the fights, its infectious. He makes me want to see them. Then while the fights are on, he explains every little nuance,every little subtlety. He tells you why, this move hurts, or why so and so is behind and what he needs to do to win.
He is well prepared, amazingly so. He knows every stat, what every fighter has done, where they’ve been, who they’ve trained with, how their condition is, and why that’s important. Joe Rogan is the single most unappreciated person in M.m.a. I guarantee you if Goldberg missed a show, no one would know and if they did, they wouldn’t care. I cant watch without Rogan. And that leads me to the next person I want to talk about. Of course since I am only allotted so much space, and my articles tend to run long, you'll have to tune in next time.
