OK...It appears Im the only one on the thread that dosen't know about Waylon Mercy. I know it was Dan Spivey, and Ive heard about this gimmick before but forgotten. Why is this gimmick considered WRestleCrap? other than the kickass name?lol

It's not really considered WrestleCrap, or at lease by RD or anyone else. The gimmick just didn't get the chance to go any longer due to injured knees on Spivey. It was an excellant charceter and take-off of DeNiro as Max Cady in '91's Cape Fear, except Waylon was given a pet worm.

Was the injured knee the reason why he wrestled so damned bad at the one PPV appearance he had at one of the first IYH PPVs (don't remember which it was) ?

I thought Waylon Mercy was a great character, and I'm really disappointed that he left so early. Danny Spivey had the "psycho face" down pat, and it was actually very creepy. I think part of the reason why I liked him so much was that he was around in an era of wrestlecrappy gimmicks (mid 90's). Week after week, we were introduced to the latest "moonlighting" wrestler, each one worse than the one before. Then out of nowhere we get Waylon Mercy, whose gimmick is that he is deranged, crazy, and violent. It was a much needed change of pace for that time period.

As I've said before, Waylon was way ahead of his time (and BTW, I don't think RD considers Waylon crap. If anything RD absolutely LOVED that gimmick). I loved how Waylon always said everything so calmly, but it was always evil stuff that he said in that tone. What I thought was great about his matches is he would shake his opponent's hand and wish him luck before the match-as well as the referee's-wrestle him catch-as-catch-can style for about a minute, then start going to work. When it came time to finish the match, Waylon would put his opponent in a Sleeperhold, and all of a sudden, this crazy-ass look would come across his face, and he would shake the other wrestler around violently. It was like he wanted to literally kill the guy right then and there (I know he didn't, but that seemed to be the Waylon character's M.O. He said it himself: "Your lives are gonna be in Waylon Mercy's Hands. Heh-heh").
You know what I mean?

I think they should bring back Waylon Mercy in some capacity. I know that Spivey has retired, but maybe somebody else could play the character (but with a different name). RD himself said that if WWE is going to keep rehashing old gimmicks, at least rehash the GOOD gimmicks.

Isn't John Heidenreich's character kind of a re-hash of Waylon Mercy...or is that just me?

But at least Sid and Leaping Lenny were entertaining, Heidenreich is just an idiot who bores me to death (both in ring and mic) and wears red trunks

I think i posted this somewhere else, why do I remember the Waylon Mercy character as a southern preacher type? I remember him being very quiet and deliberate about things, and that's what made him so damn creepy. Had that Jake Roberts quality to his promos, they just gave you the creeps. Did this guy ever incorporate any sort of religion into his character, or am I off base?

I only remember Waylon Mercy for all of one match, I believe at the previously mentioned IYH. But from all I have heard, it sounds like he was a precursor to the current version of Kane, and it sounds like even Steve Austin might have taken a hint or two from him.
I gotta ask, who thinks Waylon could have gone on to better things? Sure, he was cool, but he was so gimmicky that he likely would have been doomed to mid-carder status. Altho, a fued with Warryah would have been great.

To get a better idea of just what Mercy was supposed to be, watch the 1991 remake of Cape Fear.

If I was religious 'n' s@#t I'd swear hell was an endless loop of John Hughes films or Triple H cutting promos. I blame Mr. Reynolds for posting his JOhn Hughes views, since it's opened up a very painful part of living through the eighties. Damn you R. D.!!! Damn you to h -e- double hockey sticks!!!

People have noticed a lot of similaries between Snitsky and Heidenreich. It was implied that Snitsky was simply RAW's version of Heidenreich. However to me, baby punting is funnier than molesting Michael Cole, so I'm down with the Snitzer.

I think people are seeing similarites between Heidenreich & Waylon because of Heidenreichs match on Velocity. All the way through the match Heidenreich was saying "he's my friend" & after he beat him he shook his hand & said "He's my new friend"...or something along those lines
