This is really the ultimate question that's been burning at the back of people's heads since the dawn of time. Or at least since the 80s.
Pick your poison.

They each serve their purpose and I do indeed enjoy both.

Heathcliff I never really enjoyed.
Garfield, I have enjoyed for years and probably will for years to come.

I enjoyed Garfield and have two stuffed animals of him as a kid. With that said, Heathcliff bar none. He was hardcore and had attittude. I mean, just a real badass.
Plus, the Garfield cartoon had U.S. Acres which I LOATHED. Heathcliff had The Cadillac Cats which was AWESOME BEYOND AWESOME.

In an actual fight between the two? Eh, physically Garfield is extremely weak. He pushes around a lot of people, but when bigger bullies come around, he is bullied along with everyone else until he outsmarts said bully. Heathcliff though is a beast! He's a tough as nails alley cat and has kicked the snot out of tons of "bullies" twice his size!
Which is the bette character though? Oh, Garfield wins by miles and miles. He's lasted for 30...going on 40 (?) years now. I still find his comic very amusing, and I think he's become sort of part of the culture. Some folks hate his guts, but I will always love the ol' fat cat.

The old comics were better, when they were more centered around John rather than Garfield and Odie. John is really the interesting character. I hate it that he now has a girlfriend.

Heathcliff would kill garfield in a fight but garfield is such a better cat.

Heathcliff is actually a darker strip. Why? Because we never see Iggy's parents, and its assumed he lives with his grandmother and grandfather, meaning that his parents must have died. Forget Heathcliff, i want to know more about the nutmeg family. Oh yeah, and though garfield and friends was the better animated show, heathcliff had the better theme song.

The big question of the 80's was actually "Michael Jackson or Prince".
And as far as Heathcliff vs Garfield, Cadillac Cats >>> both of them AND US Acres.

Apples and Oranges. It's like comparing Odie and Snoopy, as opposed to comparing Brian and Dogbert. One cat is an outdoors cat owned by a little child, the other an indoors cat who enjoys eating and is very lazy. All those are acceptable parameters for cat behavior.

This is how it goes:
Garfield > Riff-Raff > Heathcliff > Felix

Heathcliff was way cooler than Garfield. Garfield was boring and his mouth never moved when he talked.

Garfield because he seems easier for me to relate to. But I still love Heathcliff.
