I'm asking here because it'll get lost in the shuffle that is the 360 thread.
I'm getting a new XBox 360 for Christmas. It's guaranteed. But I'm wondering what preparation I should be taking into account beforehand. If I get this 360, I'm gonna want to hook it up and play it immediately, but I'm not "hip", as it were, to the 360 library, not to mention the multiple accessories, cables, headsets, codpieces, and other paraphernalia associated with the console.
So, I'm leaving it to the 360 owners here to make me a checklist of all the things I should do from now until the end of the year pertaining to the XBox 360. I currently own nothing in relation to it (I'm getting it as a gift for Christmas, so I won't see it until that morning), and I'm not totally sure what version I'm getting (either Pro or Elite).
In terms of the gamage, I'm a big platforming/adventure gamer. I'm willing to warm up to FPS games, but racing and fighting games are just not my cup of tea at all. You can recommend one RPG, but I won't guarantee I'll like it. Also, recommend original XBox games. Anything else, place in the "Other" category.
In terms of accessories, reinform me as to what comes with the 360 (remember, either Pro or Elite), because I'm currently blanking, and then tell me for what I should shop. The headsets, the cables, etc., etc.
I'll almost-assuredly upgrade to XBox Live Gold by Saturday or Sunday (Friday is work, followed by an ROH show, so I'll be out all day); if you can go into detail as to all the features and perks go into Live, that'd be swell and such.
I want to be ready and rarin' to obsess by Christmas night, so get this going, folks! I'll be waiting with Microsoft-brand bells on.

Get Netflix. I am in love with Netflix on Xbox. I spend way more time watching movies than playing games.

I don't know if you are in the UK or USA, but I recently bought my xbox 360 in the uk. It was the premium (60bg HD) and it came with 1 wireless controler, headset, and one month free trial to xbox live gold (the one that lets you play mutiplayer online, silver lets you dl content but not play online).
As far as games go, platform wise you cant go wrong with Lego StarWars/Batman/Indy. All spyro type games that ooze class.
There are multiple good rpgs. Fable 2, Mass Effect, Fallout 3, Oblivion. All come down to personal preference tbh.
I suppose the new Tomb Raider would be up your street, but I have not tried it myself yet.

Mass Effect is the only RPG I've played, and it was fun as hell.
As far as FPS go, you can't really go wrong with any of the Call of Duty games. I really liked 3 but 4 was fun while it lasted, and had modern weapons.
I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest either of the Gears of War game. The second one was lit up better than the first, but they're both fun. The second one will probably be more suited for someone who hasn't played the game.
As far as original X Box games go, if you like platformers I'd suggest Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. My preferences don't usually go towards platform games, but this one was fun as hell. That's the only one of the series I remember playing, so I have no input on the other games.

Platformers: Banjo/Kazooie Nuts 'n Bolts, Sonic Unleashed(seriously, screw the reviewers), Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider: Underworld
Shooters: Call of Duty 4, Gears of War
RPG: Mass Effect, Fable 2, Lost Odyssey
That's all I can think of at the moment.

I already have the Sands of Time trilogy on the GameCube, and Sonic Unleashed on the Wii. The Banjo-Kazooie games are total gimmes.

Regardless of whether or not you get the Pro or the Elite, the following are my suggestions.
First off, you need XBox Live Gold. It's 50 dollars for the year, and if you play online, it's an excellent investment. You get immediate access to new demos when they're released, and if you get a Netflix account (which start as low as 8.99 a month) you get access to like 12,000 movies and TV shows.
Peripherals Additional Wireless Controller (1 to 3,depending on how many people you know with the system, how frequently you have guests to play games, etc.)
Wireless Network Adapter (If you're not hooking your 360 up to the Ethernet jack)
Games It all depends on what you like. Some standouts include: Halo 3 Gears of War 2 (If you have the cash, it's good to check out the original, as well) Mass Effect Smackdown vs Raw 2009 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Call of Duty: World at War Grand Theft Auto IV Oblivion Madden 09 Anything from the LEGO Series (sans LEGO Indy, IMO) Assassin's Creed (If you find it cheap, it's a pretty cool experience, but only if you find it for cheap)
XBox Live also offers some good games on XBL Arcade - Soul Calibur, Super Street Fighter 2 HD Remix, and many more classic games.
I think that's what you'd need, for the most part.

Kameo is a fun little game, although it doesn't take an awful long time to beat and the price shouldn't be too much (Amazon has them $5 used and $14-ish new, not counting shipping). Microsoft's giving it away through club.live.com for 2.5k tickets, as well as the black controllerf or 4.5k, if you have the free time. You can earn 1k a day.

Xbox live Arcade is a must if you like older games. Bonus is that you can go online with them(are you listening, Nintendo?).
I also hear that GTA IV is pretty good.
If you're unsure about Sonic Unleashed, give it a rental. Trust me, it's a completely different animal from the Wii version.

As stated, getting XBox Live Gold. I'm not much of a "people person". Wireless Network Adapter (If you're not hooking your 360 up to the Ethernet jack) Yeah, I heard from someone else that you'd need a $100 adaptor just to connect to wireless Internet, which is complete and utter madness when wireless comes standard with the Wii. GamesIt all depends on what you like. Some standouts include: Halo 3 Gears of War 2 (If you have the cash, it's good to check out the original, as well) Mass Effect Smackdown vs Raw 2009 Consider it done. Well, eventually. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Call of Duty: World at War Well... While I said I'm open to FPS games, war-based games don't appeal to me. Grand Theft Auto IV Oblivion Sure, why not? Not a big sports game guy. Anything from the LEGO Series (sans LEGO Indy, IMO) Nah...I'm not a big enough Batman or Star Wars fan to try these. Not even slightly. Assassin's Creed (If you find it cheap, it's a pretty cool experience, but only if you find it for cheap) OK. XBox Live also offers some good games on XBL Arcade - Soul Calibur, Super Street Fighter 2 HD Remix, and many more classic games. I'll think about it.

Yeah, the Wireless Adapter is pretty costly, I am lucky in that I have my computer set up almost directly next to my TV with the X-Box, so I just ran a short ethernet cable from my router to the XBox. The system itself comes with a pretty length cable, so if the router and XBox will be in the same room, its something to consider.

Also, if I may suggest....get a "plug and play" adapter for the wireless controller. This allows you to recharge your wireless controller while you playing. Also recharges it if you are not. Save moeny on batteries, as well.

Save moeny on batteries, as well. The charge doesn't really last all that long, and you end up playing with a wire. That bothers me. Myself, I purchased a $20.00 set of rechargeable batteries (with a charger) from Target, and it came with 4 batteries. 2 of these Energizers last me about a month of playtime, and when they are out, I just switch them out with the ones I have charging... I have yet to have a problems with these (besides people taking the batteries away and not returning them, *cough* *cough*) and recommend this solution over the Play and Charge Kit.

I'll be joining you soon with an X-Box of my own, so this thread is relevant to my interests.
Just a few observations:
If you're getting a holiday bundle (which are out right now), you will be getting two games with it for free: Kung Fu Panda and Lego Indiana Jones.
You can get a new wireless adapter cheaper than you could get it at Gamestop through NewEgg ($87 @ NewEgg compared to $99 @ Gamestop). However, a used adapter costs $70 at Gamestop, so weigh your options there, as it seems that you have no other choices readily available.
Also, if you have a HDTV, don't get their overpriced HDMI cables. Once again, NewEgg has cables for chicken scratch (about $7 for a 6' cable before S+H) that will make in-store prices look like a scam. If not, then please disregard these three sentences.

Games:
- Gears of War - Gears 2 - Dead Space - Silent Hill: Homecoming - Mass Effect - Project Gotham Racing 3(or 4...I prefer 3) - The Orange Box - Left 4 Dead - Oblivion - Fallout 3 - Halo 3 - Soul Calibur IV - Assassin's Creed - Call of Duty 2 - Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare - Call of Duty: World at War - Blue Dragon - Tales of Vesparia - Lost Odyssey - Uno - Geometry Wars - Geometry Wars 2 - Castle Crashers - Braid - GTA4 - Prey - Kameo: Elements of Power - Condemned: Criminal Origins - Far Cry 2 - F.E.A.R. - Far Cry Instincts: Predator - Rock Band/Rock Band 2 - Guitar Hero 2/3/World Tour
Accessories:
- 3 additional controllers - Play & Charge Kit for & additional recharge batteries for wireless controllers - Wireless Adapter if not in same room as ethernet jack - At least 1 complete band of music controllers, I strongly suggest buying the Rock Band 1 bundle, and then get an additional guitar controller.
Also, a good deal that is happening right now is a 1 year of XBL bundle that for $70 gets you 1 year of Xbox Live($50 by itself), plus the Live Messenger Pad and Project Gotham Racing 4(buying all 3 separately would easily be over $100). Oh, and buy lots of Microsoft Points cards. You'll need them to get the Xbox Live Arcade games and the Rock Band/Guitar Hero downloadable songs.
