I guess the mouse & keyboard is fine. yeah it's not really romantic but at Christmas, most people take the opportunity to get their friends useful stuff rather than romantic stuff. And yeah, it may be a good thing to get his family a lil' something as well. Maybe chocolates or something?

Yes indeed.
Although, you MUST make sure it's Italian.

I'm dating a "super Catholic" dude and he's invited me over for the whole Christmas with the family thing. Problem is, I'm not Christian and my family has never celebrated Christmas. Sure, I've done secret Santas with friends and stuff but I've never had to worry about getting a special gift. So it's about noonish on Christmas Eve and I have notttttthing to give. I just don't know what the F I'm supposed to get my boyfriend for Christmas. Do I get his family excretory matter too? Do I have to get my family excretory matter if I buy excretory matter for other people's family? I'm using the word excretory matter to see what the filter for it is now. So folks. Any ideas for last minute gifts? Truthfully I would do something "dirty" or whatever but we're opening gifts with his f'n family. So that easy way out is a no go. I made him a cat collage on photoshop but I don't think he'd appreciate that like I would. Well truthfully he does as he's a huge cat lover too but a COLLAGE?! Lame. The only thing I have is that I'm going to Best Buy to pick up a new mouse and keyboard as both of his are either really crappy or not working at all, so he needs new ones. Romantic, huh? Grrrrrrowl. And, I don't know, I'd like that gift. And Just a happy holiday mod reminder to keep this conversation on track with gift ideas and to steer away from the religious details. Oh my God, what happened to his Legs?!? "Aaahh! [He] lost [his legs] in battle!"

bottle of nice wine for dinner. Yeah, this is always the fool-proof gift. Get a decent bottle of wine for his parents and you're set. Baking cookies/brownies/etc. is also a good choice. I like to avoid gift cards because they come across as impersonal. I disagree on the gift card thing generally (as men we typically like the small measure of control over our gift afforded by our ability to pick something out), but I agree to avoid it for a boyfriend. Wine for the parents/hosts is always classy. Depending on what they're serving, you can make a nice contribution. If they are going with turkey/goose, go with something like a beaujolais-nouveau. Milder reds typically pair well with fowl. For a ham, you can go white (German Riesling, Viognier) or red (Pinot Noir). A beef roast likes big flavor, anything from a Merlot to a Spanish red, such as Grenache (aka Garnacha) or Tempranillo. If the family of the guy, being Catholic, is Italian Catholic, throw all of this out the window and buy a nice Italian wine (Sangiovese, Chianti). On the outside chance of a roast leg of lamb, spicy/bold reds (Rioja, Cotes du Rhone, Cabernet Sauvignon) hold up to garlic and seasoning very well.

I'm Catholic, so just get him whatever and don't stress over it. After all it's the thought that counts. That's what I'm told every year when all I get is socks.

I'd advocate getting him a nice round block of government cheese.
It's the gift that keeps on giving, you know.

How about a BJ at the dinner table? Everybody wins!
Okay.... in all seriousness, the best gifts are the ones with personal meaning. Does he collect anything? What's he really into?

As a Catholic, i assure you to not be any more concerned about Christmas around these folks than you would be around a family of any other Christian denomination. Sure, we might be the ones who think we made the whole shebang, but it's just Christmas. Go with that wine selection as specified above, a nice card and some small token for the the family, with his gift and a more personal one-on-one gift and you're golden.
so says Se7en
