Are we all sick and tired of them by now? I am sure I am not alone in this. How many times have I wished for a villain in a film to win, to actually blow up the world and put a bullet in James Bond's head.
I would like at least one post apolcalyptic film be about someone just having fun without rules rather than make moral choices and trying to restore order to chaos.
As Tina Turner said " We dont need another Hero",

Hmm first thought massages, second thought friendlys ice cream.
To answer your question though, I guess you need the hero being moral in order to create the conflict that makes the story.

I like happy endings, so long as I don't have to clean up afterwards.

Cloverfield?

Heh. Many movies suffer from this, although that's not to say that a downer ending would be preferable every single time. CLOVERFIELD's biggest sin wasn't its ending, but rather its incredible leaps of logic and glaring plot holes. Contrast that with a movie like THE MIST, wherein there WAS a downer ending, and the fans of happy go lucky Hollywood endings crapped all over it.

Anyone remember Bad News Bears? The kids lost their championship game. But I guess it still came off as happy becuase it allowed them to be better than what they were or some crap.

You could just talk to real people if you want to see things end in murder and despair more often. I'm fine watching someone walk off in the sunset in a movie. My state has had a nice string of high profile child abduction/assault/murder cases over the past few years that I'm not really looking to find more bad endings, certainly not when they;re costing me $8 a pop.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. It depends movie to movie. It depends on what fits the mood and script. Trying to have a bad ending just to be hip and cool is as bad as having a happy ending just to make money. Also, there are endings that are in between. It's not always black and white. There are sad-happy endings, or if you'd rather, happy-sad endings.

I mean, they go for the nihilistic, "killer gets away scott free" approach, just to seem more badass than they really are. Sometimes, yeah, depending on the movie, you NEED to have an equally badass hero to challenge the villain. For a prime example of this, see Schwarzenegger, Arnold in PREDATOR.

I don't care with either way, as long as it makes sense within the context of the film.
Except for anything with Shia Labouf, I want that mothersnorker to perish in every movie he's in (No such luck).

It's called Tragedy.
Well, actually, movies are mostly a product of low culture. Low culture always loves a comedy and loves a happy ending, it has for centuries. I mean, who really wants to leave the cinemateque feeling like they did at the end of Seven? It's supposed to be escapism.
Bond is a heroic fantasy. When dealing with heros, a tragic ending can only come about from the heroes fatal flaws, not the villian. Jason, or Siegefried both had horrible endings, but it wasn't the villian's fault.

The Day the Earth Stood Still shouldn't have had a happy ending.
If Watchmen has a happy ending or anything remotely positive, it will ruin it.
Ruin it past redemption.

I must admit though there are some cases were the villain is more likable than the "Heroes".

Danger, Spoilers ahead if you've never read Watchmen. Proceed at your own risk. Why should the movie Watchman have to end badly? The comics end on an up note, if you read past the slaughter in New York. Due to Ozzy's plan, the US and Russia begin to work together to prepare for the "alien invasion". Sure, there was tragedy (unintended) along the way (Rorschach being killed, the original Night Owl being murdered), and it isn't told how long the US and Russia work together, or if they eventually realizes they have been duped, but at the end of the story, the world is stepping back from the brink of Armageddon it was heading toward the entire story. Unless you are saying that if Watchmen doesn't include the death of tons of New Yorks, then my entire rant here is useless.

The New Dawn of the Dead with ving Rhames had a dommed ending. It sucked.
However the ending to the the Thing has no happy ending but it rocks.

The Mist is the best example of a VERY depressing ending.
Also technically, The Joker did win in Dark Knight. I mean sure he was subdued... but he did exactly what he wanted to do.
